Happy Flash Day everyone!
The Flash finally speeds back into our lives with tonight’s incredible Season Two premiere: “The Man Who Saved Central City”. Picking up several months after the thrilling final battle against Eobard Thawne (The Reverse Flash), life has changed for our hero and his friends. Central City is ready to go all out to celebrate the heroics of The Flash, but Barry must fight to overcome his inner turmoil regarding the actions required to close the singularity.
Beware of spoilers ahead!
Instead of picking up moments after last season’s fade to black, we time jump to six months later, where Barry is busy fighting crime and running solo. Team Flash has disbanded (at Barry’s insistence), and we learn where most of the gang has been hanging out since the finale. Caitlin took a position at Mercury Labs, Cisco is working for the CCPD (creating new tech to fight Meta-Humans), and Eddie is…well…still dead. Iris and Joe attempt to reconnect with Barry, and insist that he still needs a little help from his friends. When Atom Smasher makes his sizable debut, Barry will soon learn that he needs all the help he can get. Also, what exactly did Harrison Wells leave behind for Barry in the event of his demise?
So with all of the excitement going on in this episode, you might be wondering if we actually get answers regarding Barry’s attempt to close singularity. The answer is…yes (but I can’t tell you HOW it gets resolved). The effects of the singularity will be felt throughout the season, but you will definitely find out more about what actually happened in the previous episode. While the rest of the world believes that The Flash was responsible for saving the day, Barry and his friends know otherwise…DUN DUN DUN (foreshadowing).
The MVP of the premiere is Mr. Victor Garber. Professor Stein manages to get in not one, but TWO scene stealing lines in the episode (Cisco is very proud). Garber seems to be having a bit more fun with his character, and it really shows in his performance. I personally can’t wait to see how Stein interacts with the other heroes and villains of the DC Universe in the upcoming spin-off Legends of Tomorrow.
Visually, the creative team behind The Flash provides another very memorable episode. Atom Smasher’s powers were handled in a very unexpected (but awesome) manner, and the closure of the singularity proved to be equality as impressive. I also love how the show is playing with Barry running up and down buildings to gain momentum to take down threats.
Overall
“The Man Who Saved Central City” is a solid start to the season, and impressively keeps up the momentum from Season One. We do get a lot of answers in the opening episode, but we also get some new questions and hints at what is coming next. Next week will be “Flash of Two Worlds” and we get more information on Jay Garrick (played by Teddy Sears, Masters of Sex) and his ominous comments at the close of the episode.
