2015 is the year that Geeks will take over the world. Superhero movies rule the silver screen, everyone (and their mother) wants to get a ticket to San Diego Comic-Con International, and reading comics has become socially acceptable. Over the last few years, Geek and Nerd culture have spilled over into the world of music, and numerous bands and performers have risen to add their own personal mark in the growing genre.
During Comic-Con 2015, a new multi-day offsite program took place at Ruocco Park in Downtown San Diego . The Bad Ass Music Festival (or BAMF for short), was a crowd funded geek rock event that raised over $12,000 from supporters. This amazing program included performances by geek musicians and comedians, and also featured podcasts, panel discussions, and even Quiddich matches. If the talent alone wasn’t enough to draw your interest, the festival also had sponsorship from Karl Strauss (FREE BEER!), IDW Games, Dynomighty, Villainous Lair, Rocket Fizz, and more. If you didn’t get a Con pass, or needed a break from the lines outside of Hall H, this was the place to be.
In regards to music, highlights included Nerf Herder rocking out the “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” Theme Song (several times in a row), Kirby Krackle leading a sing along of “Everything is Awesome” from the LEGO Movie, Allie Goertz’s performance of “Everything’s Coming Up Millhouse”, Random Gibberish’s newest song “Straight and ARROW”, Paul and Storm rallying the crowd for a “Nun Fight”, and Eben Brooks performing the “BAMF Official Theme Song”.
BAMF really had something for everyone, and hopefully this event makes a return next year. If you missed out the first annual BAMF program, make sure this gets added to your list for offsite events during SDCC 2016! Did I mention the free beer?
