Movie Review: Horrible Bosses 2

HB2

by Matt Sernaker, Managing Editor

A new comedy is about to hit theaters just in time for Thanksgiving, and that is Horrible Bosses 2! The sequel features returning characters Nick (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis, Saturday Night Live), and Dale (Charlie Day, Pacific Rim) as they attempt to start their own business. As predicted, things don’t go quite as planned, and the trio once again resort to drastic measures to try and solve their newest predicament.

After the events of the first Horrible Bosses, Nick, Dale, and Kurt decide to become their own bosses and launch a new product called “The Shower Buddy”. When Rex Hanson (Chris Pine, Star Trek) and his father Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz, Inglorious Bastards) offer to order 100,000 units of their new product, it seems like the guys have finally hit it big. Things of course are not what they seem, and the Hansons double-cross the gang and cancel the order days before completion, leaving them on the verge of bankruptcy. With their backs to the wall, the trio come up with a plan to cover the money lost: kidnap Rex and hold him for ransom!

We all know that sequels can be hit or miss, and in regards to comedies, usually it is miss (I’m looking at you The Hangover: Part II). In the case of HB2, I can’t believe how consistently funny the movie was from beginning to end. While I thought the first movie was mildly entertaining, I wasn’t blown away by the story. For the second installment, the writers and actors brought their “A-Game”. Instead of playing off the tropes and running bits from the first movie into the ground, HB2 took the opportunity to do a story that could live independently from it’s previous story, but still include a few comedic callbacks.
Aside from the main trio, HB2 also includes fantastic appearances by Jennifer Aniston (Friends), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), and Jamie Foxx (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). The person who truly steals the movie is Chris Pine, who demonstrates his versatile acting skills and ability to perform slapstick comedy. Not many people could have pulled off some of the bits that Pine did, and it makes the movie that much more enjoyable.
Overall, Horrible Bosses 2 was not the film that I expected. I had extremely low expectations going into a comedic sequel, and I am pleased to say how much fun I had throughout the entire film. If you are looking for something fun to watch this Thanksgiving Weekend, add this to your list.
Rating: ★★★★½

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
