Logitech continues to prove itself as a leader in quality gaming gear with the superb G402 Hyperion Fury Gaming Mouse. So if you’ve found your performance lacking in the FPS department, this may very well be the solution to your gaming woes.
My excitement began immediately from the moment I started reading the description on the box. Eight programmable buttons and controls, the ability to adjust four DPI settings on the fly, an on-board memory profile, ultra-low friction feet and a high-speed fusion engine – oh my! Taking the G402 out of its cardboard confines only provided further fuel for my fire. Featuring a lightweight design and being a perfectly comfortable size for my hand, this little beauty looks sleek and sexy, whilst also being able to feel totally badass!
Sure, the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury looks the part, but does it have the skills to pay the bills? As it turns out, the answer is “Yes. Yes it does.” A quick trip to the Logitech website allowed me to download the Logitech Gaming Software – a vital tool for gaming enthusiasts. With it, I was offered a variety of options to enable me to customize the G402 to fit my own preferred gaming style, with menus to configure the various DPI settings, customize button functions, tweak the LED settings and more.Technical setup done and dusted, it was finally time to put this puppy through its paces, and what a delightful experience it was! The first thing definitely worth mentioning is the implementation of the adjustable DPI settings via the DPI Up, DPI Down and DPI Shift buttons. For those of you who aren’t in the know, DPI in this instance relates to the mouse sensitivity or “drag speed”. Words cannot adequately communicate how handy it is to be able to change your mouse sensitivity on-the-fly without having to interrupt your game (particularly if you are competing online).
Using the DPI Up or DPI Down buttons with my index finger allowed me to scroll through four different DPI values (between 240-4000) that I had previously set using the Logitech Gaming Software, which proved to be immensely useful whilst playing the PC port of Dead Rising 3. Being a third-person action game, I found that having a lower DPI setting was necessary in order to stop the camera from panning too quickly around my player, but for the sections of the game that required the fine aiming of firearms, being able to increase the sensitivity right then and there was a godsend. This function also comes in handy just when moving from one type of game to the next, thanks also to the on-board memory that remembers your selected settings. Bonus points for the LED indicator that lets you know which setting you are currently using.
First person shooters highlight the importance of the DPI Shift button. Far too often when playing first person shooters I find that even though I have adequately configured my mouse sensitivity for general looking or hip-firing modes, all of my precise configuring turns to crap the moment I aim down the sights, usual because this level of sensitivity can’t be set independently and therefore is identical to that of my hip-firing (hence, much too quick for fine-aiming). Thankfully, the DPI Shift button changes all of that, as when the button is held (located at the tip of your thumb), the mouse becomes locked to a low DPI setting of your choice, resulting in slower, smoother and much more accurate aiming. Snipers will fall in love with the DPI Shift button. My only gripe with it is that I felt it was just a teeny bit too far away from where my hand would naturally rest, requiring me to shuffle my grip further up the mouse in order for my thumb to better reach the button.
Thankfully, the two remaining “extra” buttons were much easier to use with my thumb. I must say, having two additional buttons on a mouse (one each designated to the top and bottom parts of my thumb) sure do make for a much better gaming session, particularly when playing a game that features a whole slew of additional commands beyond the standard “Open”, “Use” and “Jump” functions. Whether configuring them to perform “Evade” and “Special Attack” functions in Dead Rising 3 or “Grenade” and “Special Grenade” functions in Call Of Duty, these awesome additions really do have a profound impact on my gaming performance.
Even the “normal” mouse features work great. The left and right mouse buttons of the G402 just feel “right”, the whole unit glides incredibly smoothly and effortlessly over my mouse pad, and even something as simple as clicking the scroll wheel is much better, as I never once experienced the accursed “accidentally scrolled while trying to click the wheel” problem that I am used to with my previous mouse. Using the Fusion Engine Settings in the Logitech Gaming Software also shows how superior the fusion engine is over a standard optical sensor.
Yes sir, the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury Gaming Mouse really does do it all. A sleek and well-designed gaming tool that is incredibly easy to get to grips with (seriously, am I not the Pun King?) whilst delivering superior gaming performance, the Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury comes highly recommended by yours truly for those really wanting to dramatically enhance their gaming performance. My only major complaint about this little guy? I have to pass it on to the next lucky reviewer… Godspeed little buddy. I’ll miss you…
