1. Stan Lee Made An Appearance
The Nerd King who made a lot of what is possible in today’s entertainment industry not only flew all the way Down Under, but was energetic, spritely, happy and all smiles to the fans for the whole weekend. He signed, he posed, he photographed, he talked, he walked, he answered questions. The whole nerdom and Marvel fandom here in Australia salutes you for it Dear Sir.
2. John Barrowman re-enacting his naked dance moves
One thing we learnt here in Sydney from Mr Barrowman himself is that you should never dance naked for 2 hours in a German hotel with your female co-star. Better yet, don’t do it with your window blinds open because the whole hotel can see the reflection of you on the windows of the opposite building.
3. The Cosplayers
This year’s cosplayers have outdone themselves. Truly. Just look at the above image of this Zombie Stormtrooper playing along to the kid with an Iron Man Repulsor. It warms my nerdy heart.
4. “After you mate”, “No please, after you”
Being the Aussies that we are, Sydney remained shiny by being courteous and well behaved. We’re talking long lines and even longer waits where everyone stood among strangers and left being friends.
5. These guys
Music is the language that we can all understand. And these guys get it. They do. The Consouls Band is a band that played jazz styled video game tunes throughout the weekend (Have we ever had a live band at Supanova Sydney?). Go check them out for some consoul soothing music!
6. Ming-Na Wen speaking Cantonese
Agent May is actually a really verbose, smiling and very pretty lady in real life – but don’t call her The Cavalry – she’ll go back to her stern and stoic ways. Question her language abilities? She’ll kick your ass with her Cantonese skills.
7. The SyFy 360 FanCam
Your Sydney ComicsOnline team had major fun at the SyFy AU FanCam booth – you can see it on our faces.
8. Machine Guns as Legs is still pretty cool
If you’re going to have a peg leg, at least make it a working machine gun. Now if we only thought about these ideas stuck sitting in traffic in LA.
9. Katie Cassidy running out to tackle-hug John Barrowman
Fan: If you and Scott had a celebrity free-pass list, who would be on it? Katie Cassidy runs out on stage from nowhere, tackle-hugs John Barrowman and screams out “Of course me!” Definitely an adorable moment between Arrow co-stars! (If you’re curious to who it would be, it would be Chris Evans for John. Scott would watch – “have fun explaining that to your kids tonight!”)
10. Record Number of Attendees
Supanova Sydney keeps getting bigger every year. The numbers for 2014 aren’t out yet, but judging by the crowds on the floors and the general ambience, I’m sure we’ve smashed last year’s number of 39,400 attendees. Easy.
