Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today (DVD) Review

Up for review is the motion comic book from Shout! Factory Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today which hits stores May 13th.  The story takes place between issues #11-16 of Wolverine Weapon X  by Jason Aaron and Ron Garney. Wolverine Weapon X is part of the Marvel Knights line which is not to be confused with the Marvel Max line, a completely separate universe.  Though darker in story, Tomorrow Dies Today takes place in the same universe as the regular Marvel universe.

Initially I was skeptical as the concept of a future killer robot was nothing new.  I was also intrigued that the story would involve killer Deathloks as he is a character known for good.   I knew I could not go wrong with the creative team of Jason Aaron and Ron Garney.  For those not familiar with Jason Aaron’s work, he is the creative mastermind writer behind Vertigo’s long running title Scalped.  As a result, Marvel had hired him to do such titles as Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Incredible Hulk, and many other titles as of late.  And of course Ron Garney’s artwork is beautiful.  I have been a fan of his work since Skaar, The Son Of Hulk.

The story takes place after the events of Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America, where Steve Rogers is initially found to be dead.  Of course Rogers  is very much alive but he is not donning the Cap outfit.  Instead his best friend Bucky has taken over the star spangled costume in his absence.  Rogers and Logan (aka Wolverine) are bar hopping across the world in the Blackbird (aka X-Jet) with Nightcrawler as the chauffeur/designated driver.

Meanwhile an evil corporation in the future called Roxxon is using Deathloks to kill future resistance fighters or what they call “vigilantes” in the present day.  Wolverine and Rogers must team up with a mysterious woman if they are to stop the killer Deathloks from wiping out all the heroes and future resistance fighters.  Also making appearances are Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Bucky, the current Captain America.

Though this concept is the same as the Terminator franchise, I enjoyed the take Jason Aaron took towards handling key characters and the main story.  The tone of Tomorrow Dies Today is very dark but there’s adult  humor found in the interactions between his characters.  Aaron knows how to keep the tone of a story while bringing comic relief to his characters.  Ron Garney’s gritty style of drawing is perfectly suited for this Marvel Knights tale.

Without giving away spoilers, you could say the message of the story is bittersweet.  If you could go back and do things differently, would you?  If so could you change things for the better or would you only make it worse?  These are just some of the messages Aaron is trying to convey to his audience.  If you enjoyed reading the issues of Wolverine Weapon X, pick up your copy of Wolverine Weapon X: Tomorrow Dies Today  from Shout! Factory May 13th!
