The 1980’s were truly a great time for C to Z grade movies and the people who loved them. The shlock was so thick you could wade though it on your way to the concessions stand for you popcorn and Milkduds. It was the era that gave us The Evil Dead, and along with that cult classic we were given the gift of geek god icon Bruce Campbell.
The Evil Dead trilogy was not the only place in cult movie canon that was graced with Bruce’s effervescent screen presence, he was also in that sheer cinematic brilliance that was 1988’s Maniac Cop, a under-appreciated gem in the slasher film genre. Seriously insane killer cop running around the streets of New York, what is not to love with that premise?
Apparently Hollywood agrees. It could be that the guy or gal in charge of the mythic and powerful Green Light is secretly a fan of cult slasher flicks or the success of Rob Zombie’s 2013 reboot of Evil Dead but whatever the reason we are getting a Maniac Cop remake. Yeah, you heard that right Maniac Cop is back. The production company Wild Bunch, the same folks who brought us Spring Breakers, is heading the reboot with plans to announce the films director at the Cannes films festival.
Adding awesome news on top of amazing the writer tapped to write the script is Ed Brubaker, the writer behind the “Captain America: The Winter Solder” comics. I am beyond excited by this news, as I am a serious Brubaker fangirl. Yep I said it, the dread FG word, because I love this writer just that much. The man’s run on Captain America remains one of my favorite runs by any author on any comic ever, so him writing the reboot of Maniac Cop is great news.
So there you have it. Maniac Cop reboot, Wild Bunch producing, Brubaker writing, the only thing missing is a Bruce Campbell cameo and the event horizon of total awesome will be reached. I for one can not wait.
