DVD Review: Adventure Time: The Suitor

Do I even need to ask what time it is? Absofreakingloutely not! We all know exactly what time it is- it’s Adventure Time, my friends. Which is always the best time, in my opinion. So grab your favorite sword and your super-awesome Finn Hat and get ready to kick some monster booty. Or, you know, just watch a DVD…whichever is easier.

This month Cartoon Network expanded their ever-growing Adventure Time library with the sixth volume of its episodic releases, Adventure Time: The Suitor. The DVD includes sixteen algebraic episodes and a Little Did You Know character gallery bonus feature. Plus it has some super-sweet cover art featuring the vastly under-appreciated, but always awesome, Peppermint Butler.

The DVD kicks off with the titular season five episode, The Suitor, wherein we are introduced to Braco- the suitor who believes it is his destiny to win the heart of fair Princess P-Bubs. But the madness doesn’t stop there. Throw in a little of everyone’s favorite horse, James Baxter, a dash of the Sky Witch, Maja, a big helping of the Hug Wolf, and a visit from the King Worm, and we’ve got a recipe for almost three hours of big time fun.

The box’s cover art, featuring Pep-But and images of the Candy Kingdom is definitely the best looking of all the DVD releases so far. It’s incredibly colorful and eye-catching, and a wonderful representation of the show’s silliness and sense of fun.

The disc inside contains sixteen episodes, mainly from seasons four and five, with a slight peppering from other seasons. The different episodes highlight all of the series’ main characters, including Finn, Jake, Bubblegum, Marceline, and BMO. You’ll learn about BMO’s orgins in Be More, check out Finn’s past life in The Vault, and find out just what happens when Marceline gets too hungry in Red Starved. My personal favorite was Shh!, where an epic game of silence between Jake and Finn has unexpected consequences. But no matter which episode is your fave, you’re bound to have a blast watching them all.

The special features fell a little flat with this release. The only feature being a “Little Did You Know” selection with five brief character bios. Being a fan of bonus content, I was a little let down that we weren’t given a little more to sink our teeth into. I would have appreciated a little more behind-the-scenes content. I know a lot goes into the creating of this series, and I’m always fascinated to learn more about it. However, that aside, this is still a great addition to any Adventure Time fan’s collection.
If you love tuning in to watch the Land of Ooo on Monday nights and can’t get enough of Finn, Jake, and all their buds, you’ll definitely want to grab yourself a copy of Adventure Time: The Suitor. If you’re a fan of extra content, you might want to wait for the next full season release (Seasons 1-3 are now available on both DVD and Blu-ray), but otherwise this is yet another fantastic release from Cartoon Network.
