At Comic Con 2013, executive producer Robert Singer announced that there will be a Supernatural spin off series. This new show would hold a new cast and new plots that I hope can do justice to the original show. Now word has spread like wild fire and if you don’t know the title of the new series, you are not a Supernatural fan.
Supernatural: Bloodlines, formerly Supernatural: Tribes, will start in a back door pilot from the original show with Dean and Sam. Word on the web is that episode 20 of season 9 is the one to look out for. I don’t know how the new cast will be introduced or even how it’s going to connect to the current series, but they got some big shoes to step into. From different entertainment sources and twitter feeds, it seems Bloodlines will be more based around the supernatural communities than following a hunter on a hunt. I smell a boat load of more drama, don’t you?
The first series, Supernatural started as a journey with brother Dean and Sam hunting demons in order to find their father who was hunting for the demon who killed their mother. It later progressed and traversed into biblical territory with the Apocalypse plot and bringing angels into the fold. With the war between the two mythological entities, the brothers were still doing what they were taught to do all their lives, help people and hunt demons. The dynamic between Dean and Sam got bumpy for a while, but for five seasons we were immersed in a war that seemed to be tipping either way. With a fantastic finish in the season 5 finale, they punched into season 6, though many are still very controversial on the success of such a season. The return of Sam and Dean along with friends like Bobby and Castiel, they were able to pull off season 6 and go onto season 7 with a story that followed the myths of leviathans, the mother of all, and purgatory. That got a bit messy and the lines of family, friendship, and enemies were all blurred. They blurred so much that when season 8 came rolling around, Dean came back with a replacement best friend, this time instead of an angel he was a vampire. Sadly, Benny didn’t last long because the ties of blood family prevailed, but now in season 9 the tensions that were not addressed in season 8 are now being let out of the closet.
Speaking of tensions, the backdoor pilot has Sam and Dean working together despite it. They head to Chicago where they meet the crew that will be the cast in Bloodlines. Luckily for the new series and the fans of the originals, Dean and Sam only work a case before they have to move on. So don’t expect them to stay in Chicago too long. They just set up the series to carry on their own. However, I would not put it past the producers to cross the series a few times before the end of Supernatural’s run.
So with that let’s meet the cast of the new baby show.
Ennis Roth (played by Lucien Laviscount) will be the hunter of the series and I’m assuming a man Dean and Sam will meet up with in episode 20 for their job. He is the son of a cop and plans to follow in his father’s footsteps, when someone close to him is murdered possibly by a demon. So this shows how Ennis is thrown into demonic work. The Winchester brothers let him in on the truth of their world as well as how Chicago is run by supernatural families, Godfather style.
So far we only know of a few members from the ruling shapeshifter and werewolf families. Among them are David and Margo Hayden (Nathaniel Buzolic, Danielle Savre), brother and sister who are the children of the shapeshifter mafia. While David tried to run and live his life like a human, Margo use to be a punk-turned-corporate woman as the new head of the family. Meanwhile on the werewolf side, siblings Violet and Julian Durant (Melissa Roxburgh, Sean Faris) have a lot of drama. Violet and David have a star-crossed Romeo and Juliet scenario going on. On the other side of that, Julian is Ennis’s arch nemesis. I honestly think this is a few Shakespearean dramas mashed together, and this is only from the character descriptions.
But wait, there is another player who is slightly older than the rest of the cast so far. Freddie Costa (Stephen Martines) is a cop in his 30s, who is a friend of Ennis’s family and knew his dad from way back. In his character description, it is alluded that he either might not be totally human or might have some kind of deep connection with the monster world. Unfortunately I’m not psychic and I did not write the show, or else I would not be writing this article right now. Let’s not forget the other stars that are lining up and being cast in this show
All in all, it seems like an interesting show to wait for. I want to know if Chicago is like the monster city capital with all these ruling families or what. Supposedly there are five major families, so I’m expecting turf wars people. For example, werewolves trying to eat people and the vampires (if they are a part of the major families) telling them that those humans are their prey. Not only has that, but the question still stands if there is a ruling family for each supernatural species. That would be intriguing but that would be up the fact of the Alpha monsters that were being hunted back during Supernatural’s “Mother of All” story arc. Were the alpha monsters part of the families or did they appoint them? The fact that it is not a traveling journey and it is set in a centralized city is also piquing my interest. No new impala wanna-be car for us. So if you haven’t caught up with the original series, you better before this new one creeps up on you and decides to show you its little friends. The backdoor pilot for Supernatural: Bloodlines airs Tuesday, April 29 at 9pm on the CW.
