Join ComicsOnline in Las Vegas as we Boldly Go to cover the Official Star Trek Convention. Those of you who have seen the backs of our ComicsOnline World Tour 2013 tee shirts might recognize that while we were already slated to cover the San Francisco version of this event this year, we hadn’t planned on being at the big Las Vegas Creation Star Trek Convention. As fortune would have it, a wormhole brought us to Las Vegas at the right time and we hope to see you there as well!

The Galaxy’s Largest Star Trek Convention Beams Back to

 Las Vegas August 8 – 11, 2013

With a Record-Breaking Number of Star Trek Guest Stars

Creation Entertainment’s Official Star Trek Convention returns to Las Vegas for its 12th year August 8-11 at The Rio Suites Hotel. With over 100 celebrities, this event marks the largest gathering of Star Trek stars in the world from the very first pilot episode “The Cage” in 1964 through the most recent J.J. Abram’s feature film Star Trek Into Darkness.

Over 12,000 fans from around the galaxy are expected to attend the celebration honoring Gene Roddenberry’s legacy of a positive future that spans close to 50 years of film and television entertainment.  This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with a special reunion planned for the weekend.

Judson Scott, who portrayed Joachim in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, became the 100th in-person celebrity, a list that is headlined by William Shatner, Jeri Ryan, Kate Mulgrew, George Takei, Joel Grey, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes and LeVar Burton.   Making her first convention appearance, Alice Eve, Dr. Carol Marcus of the recent hit feature film Star Trek Into Darkness, represents the latest incarnation of the franchise.

This year the convention will feature on-stage appearances by behind-the-screen greats, writer/creators Brannon Braga and Ira Behr.  David Gerrold, writer of the classic Star Trek episode “The Trouble with Tribbles” will take fans back to the original series days during his scheduled lectures.   Nine-time Emmy Award winner Michael Westmore, the legendary Star Trek make-up designer, will make a rare convention appearance on Saturday.  Senior Illustration Designer Rick Sternbach and prop/set designers Mike and Denise Okuda will also discuss their important contributions to the look of Star Trek over the decades.

In addition to celebrities, the non-stop theatrical show will include behind-the-scenes presentations, costume and trivia contests, no-minimum-bid auctions of unique collectibles and one-of-a-kind items, and special fan-made music videos.

The exhibit hall will boast companies and distributors selling and displaying Star Trek and sci-fi collectibles from across the nebula.  The hall will feature a replica of the entire center section of the Enterprise-D Bridge including all the center chairs and computers and the tactical station.  This replica was built by Paramount’s original set designers, Herman Zimmerman and Michael Okuda, in 1997.  Along with this display, a special on-stage panel will occur at which NewStarship.com founder Huston Huddleston and his restoration team Doug Drexler (Deep Space Nine and Battlestar Galactica), David Gerrold (writer, Star Trek the original series and Star Trek: The Next Generation), Larry Nemecek (writer/historian, Star Trek) and surprise guests discuss the massive project that began with fans saving a discarded Paramount-built touring set and turning it into what will become the world’s first interactive educational Sci-Fi Museum.

Fans have the chance to not only see the stars on stage but to meet them personally at parties, autograph sessions and photo opportunities.  Thousands are expected to come dressed as their favorite Star Trek characters, donning outrageously intricate costumes that take months to prepare.

On Saturday, fans will be part of our Guinness Book of World Records attempt at winning back the title for most people gathered together in Star Trek costumes in one place. This record was ours for almost two years (and we were beaten with 1063, just 23 fans above our record) and we’re out to take it back home where it belongs in 2013 . . . bring friends and extra costumes as we go for the gold!  Also that day a Costume Competition will offer huge prizes and audience acclaim, as judged by our celebrity panel.

Along with nighttime Star Trek themed parties, a Saturday Night Gala Celebration will be hosted by the legendary singing star James Darren and will feature performances by Star Trek actors who have previously appeared on Broadway.  A separate ticket price will apply.

General admission tickets are available in advance (www.creationent.com) or at the door for $35 on Thursday and Friday, and $40 Saturday and Sunday.  General admission tickets for children 12 and under are $25.  Children under six are admitted free when accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Show hours are Thursday, 10:00 AM – 7 PM, Friday, 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM, Saturday, 8:30 AM – 7:00 PM and Sunday, 9 AM – 6:00 PM (hours are tentative at this time).
