by Kerrie Hui, Reporter

Season 2 was promised to be bigger and better. And bigger and better it was. After having raised over $800,000 for the new season, Freddie Wong, Matt Arnold, Will Campos and Brian Firenzi are bringing us a new season of video gaming goodness in six TV-length episodes of around thirty minutes each.

“We want to go bigger and better in every way – more game types, more action, more effects, and more gaming-related puns and obscure references!” – VGHS Kickstarter page

After having a hard drive issue which caused a delay in its release, and an outcry from hundreds of sleep deprived fans (Video Game High School Season 2 Episode 1 had over 1000 likes on Youtube before it even finished uploading, thanks to the hoards of fans whom stayed up for its release), the episode was finally released around 4:15am PST.

Episode 1 kicks off with amongst sweeping hillside locations that are reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings. This in itself signals the significant growth of Video Game High School in its new season. The scene serves as a backdrop for a “questing” game that Brian D (Josh Blaylock), Ted Wong (Jimmy Wong) and Ki Swan (Ellary Porterfield) partake in all night, leading them to be late for class.

Whilst en route, we find out from The Nerdist himself, Chris Hardwick, that The Law (Brian Firenzi) has been accused of cheating. This serves as the main driver for this season’s major plot arc. The Law is later found guilty of aimbotting, and as such, Video Game High School has been stripped of all its varsity FPS title wins and banned from competing in this year’s high school championships. When Stan Lee makes an appearance with a verdict and a judge’s hammer, you bet your ass that both The Law and Video Game High School are in jeopardy.

Not only does this put a pin in Jenny Matrix’s (Johanna Braddy) dream of captaining the varsity team, Jenny’s estranged mother (Cynthia Watros) is coaching the varsity teams this year as a favor for Dean Ernie Calhoun (Harley Morenstein). Let it be known that Jenny has mommy issues.

On the romance front, Brian D has finally plucked up the courage to ask Jenny on a date, only to be foiled, as during said date, Coach Matrix shows up in his dorm room and places him in the starting line up for the varsity team, followed by a series of unfortunate events that end up with him taped to a flagpole for the night in a prank that pays tribute to forty years of Video Game High School tradition. Jenny finds him stuck to the pole and is pissed at him, but they have a sweet moment together when she instead tells him to settle in for the night, then proceeds to read out the Playbook of Strategy, assigned by Coach Matrix, to him.

On the other front, Ki Swan suffers from a hilarious dilemma: Freddie Wong refuses to give her homework and when she complains about this to Calhoun, Freddie is forced to give it to her, but on one condition: she will never do any homework in his class as homework. This causes her to have a breakdown and read all the rule books that exist in the library. Because of this, she ultimately finds a loophole for Video Game High School to compete in this year’s tournament.

Since only the varsity team was banned, the junior varsity team takes their place in the tournament. Finally we get to see some of the awesome visual FX that we have come to know and love about Video Game High School. Of course, the JV team is not up to scratch and is slaughtered in the first round and only by pure luck do they win the second one. It is up to Jenny Matrix and Brian D to lead their team to victory with Coach Matrix’s “surprise delivery” in the final round.

VGHSS2Ep1Recap_4

Will the JV team make it to the big leagues this year and restore Video Game High School to its former glory? What will happen now that The Law has been revealed to be Brian D’s new roommate? Will Jenny and Brian D finally get together now that she’s the captain and she’s too focused on winning to be dating him?
