Movie Review: Despicable Me 2

Despicable-Me-2-Movie

by Gema Luna, Reporter

The ex-criminal mastermind Gru, voiced by Steve Carell (The Office) and his minions are back in Despicable Me 2!

When the Anti-Villain League (AVL) needs help saving the world, they do what any smart super-secret agency does: kidnap the greatest ex-super villain and ask him to help. But Gru is no longer interested in evil, world domination, and such things. Gru’s world revolves around his adorable daughters Agnes (Elsie Fisher – Raising Hope), Edith (Dana Gaier – 30 Rock) and Margo (Miranda Cosgrove – iCarly) and of course growing his venture of jams and jellies.  When Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand – Arthur) tells him that he is quitting due to boredom and provides a better job offer, Gru realizes that he is bored as well and accepts his new role in the world. With the help of Lucy (Kristen Wiig – Bridesmaids), a spy from AVL, they go undercover in a bakery at a mall where they meet restaurant owner Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt – Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) and his son Antonio (Moises Arias – The Middle).

In a world where unplanned sequels are the kiss of death for a lot of movies, Despicable Me 2 is that rare movie that it is as good as the original. I cried, I laughed and I cheered out loud, and I am not ashamed to own it. The story is full of depth and comedy, well developed new characters that you fall in love with them instantly. The minions and Agnes stole the movie with their antics and her beautiful soul. The end credits have a Minion audition that is funny and worth staying a couple of extra minutes see.  I have to say that Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, the guys who voice the minions, make you feel like you are in a room full of thousands of these little guys, each with their own personality and tone of voice.

I am the first to admit that I hate 3D movies, they are dark so many details are missed. However, this movie I did not mind seeing in 3D, I might even see it again in the same format. It wasn’t overwhelming, and it wasn’t lacking detail, there was even times that I forgot it was 3D.

Overall

I have been waiting for 3 years for this movie to arrive and I was beyond please. No matter how old you are you will like this movie with the adult undertones and the innocence of a child.
