Prepare to dive into the violent and gritty underbelly of Winter City #6, a dark but beautiful comic book based in a dangerous metropolis that you would never want to live in but will definitely want to keep revisiting… well, at least through the looking-glass of this comic.
Beginning with a mass of S.W.A.T and policemen surrounding a building apparently containing a very dangerous individual, the majority of the story follows the events that unfold as the boys in blue attempt to infiltrate the building. The end result? Not as successful as they had hoped for.
The unnamed vigilante/outlaw (I’m not yet sure which he is) in question is very capable of holding his own, as he stalks the cops from the shadows and executes vicious non-lethal takedowns using fighting skills that could almost make Batman sweat. In short, this dude is tough.
While the story is almost exclusively set during the building siege, the scenario is suddenly broken up in the middle with a few pages showing a young boy named Sam Winters (who I can only assume is the costumed crusader as a child) fixing various military gear in his uncle’s shed and playing with throwing knives with a scary amount of proficiency…
To me the siege on the building played out in a very cinematic manner, complete with awesome fight choreography and well thought-out panel design. Of course, this book wouldn’t have been half as enjoyable were it not for the amazing artwork.
An edgy, gritty art style with bold inks is used to awesome effect, and really helps to emphasise the violence and chaos that ensues within the pages. The hero (or anti-hero) looks like an incredibly menacing spectre, like a grim reaper on steroids. Colour is also used to great effect, with contrasting palettes being utilised in different scenes to create vastly differing atmospheres.
As I mentioned earlier, I haven’t read the previous issues in this series. Am I going to now? You better believe it! While Winter City #6 was a very enjoyable read for a noob to the series such as myself, it really does make you want to go back and grab the earlier issues to get the full story behind who this mysterious warrior is and why he is doing what he does. And if that sounds like a bad thing, I can assure you it is not, but rather a testament to how enjoyable and engaging this book was.
Fans of dark vigilantes like Spawn and Batman will definitely find something to love with Winter City #6. Looks like I have just found another book that needs to be added to my pull list, and once you read it, I’m certain you will be in the same boat as me.
