Blu-ray Review: Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful-Creatures1

by Gema Luna, Assistant Editor

From director Richard LaGravenese (P.S. I Love You) comes Beautiful Creatures, a story about young love and secrets. It’s love at first sight when small town Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich – Stoker) meets Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert – In Fear), the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, Lena is a “Caster” and her dark secret comes with a curse that threatens to separate them forever.  Now you can own Beautiful Creatures on Blu-ray!

Ethan is a teenage boy who feels that everybody in his small town is stuck there and no one seems to care. After meeting Lena, a girl that just has moved in with her recluse uncle (Jeremy Irons – Die Hard: With A Vengeance), Ethan gets more than he bargains for because Lena has a huge secret. Lena comes from a family of Casters, and on her sixteenth birthday her fate will be claim by either the dark or the light. As her birthday gets nearer and their love grows, as well as her powers, trouble arises in the form of her mother Sarafine (Emma Thompson – Brave) the most powerful dark caster that wants Lena to join her and an old curse that does not allow casters to fall in love with humans.

The movie starts at a fast pace for the first hour, then loses steam making it drag on longer than needed. The main actors are fairly unknown, and their southern accents are hard to follow at times, which is sad that the supporting actors carry most of the movie. Jeremy Irons, Emily Rossum and Emma Thompson are amazing in their roles even though the script has many issues. The writing even though witty and fun, has massive plot holes that at times make you lost or feel like you miss something.

From the colors to the Ravenwood mansion LaGravenese takes you into and incredible display of visual effects that transport you into their beautiful strange world. Beside the script lacking character development, the wittiness and the banter between the main characters are the only things that keep this movie moving forward.

Special Features:

  • Book to screen: If you are interested in how a movie is developed, this special feature is for you. Actors, producers and director take you on a mini tour of movie making, how the director conceptualize the movie and how the actors felt attracted to the project.
  • Beautiful Creatures: Designing the Costumes: Jeffrey Kurland (Inception) with the actors talk about the amazing costume designs for this movie and how they help tell the story.

Overall

Beautiful Creatures was entertaining especially if you are into the young adult paranormal genre. You really want to buy the Blu-ray of this movie just for the visual effects. The beauty of the cinematography of this movie need to be seen in HD as well as the details of the magnificent costumes.

Rating: ★★★½☆
