It’s that time of year, where big explosions, fairy tales, guys in masks and big stars are all the focus of our attention. No not Comic-Con… I am talking of summer blockbusters!!!
However, this year it all started in March with a little movie about a future country named Panem and a 16 year-old that rebelled against its capitol, and then in May another little movie with a couple of humans and a Hulk, not to mention a third installment of the black suited operation to keep humans from knowing that there are aliens among us.
So let’s get the ball rolling with June:
JUNE 1st:
The month starts with the dark re-invention of the classic and otherwise innocent Brothers Grimm’s fairytale Snow White.
In Snow White and The Huntsman, first time movie director Rupert Sanders takes us on a journey into a far away land where an evil queen, played by Charlize Theron (Prometheus), seeks immortality. According to her magic mirror on the wall, the only way she can get it is by killing her beautiful step daughter Snow White (Kristen Stewart, Twilight). In order to accomplish this she hires a man with nothing to lose and only known as The Huntsman, a role that is played by the very busy Chris Hemsworth (Thor). The huntsman finds Snow White only to become her mentor and protector in her fight against the evil queen.
If by watching the trailers tells me anything, the main focus of this movie is going to be Theron’s character, Queen Ravenna, which makes me think that the movie has hope. It looks like a good plot, there are action scenes for the boys, and with all the visual effects and a semi nude Theron I hope to be distracted from the lacking skills of Steward.
June 8th:
The second week of June brings us a sci-fi adventure that was first pitch to be a prequel to Ridley Scott’s original Alien; however they turn it into their own free standing movie in the same universe. Prometheus is the story of a team of explorers that find clues to the origin of mankind leading them to go across the universe to find answers only to find themselves in a battle to save earth.
Noomi Rapace (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) is explorer Elizabeth Shaw and she is joined by Logan Marshall-Green (The OC), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and the incredibly hard working Charlize Theron (Aeon Flux). Ridley Scott, after 30 years of being gone from the genre, returns to his roots of Sci-Fi to direct this new project.
This movie promises to be in the same level as Alien, but my doubts are high on the blockbuster
potential of this movie. For fans of Sci-fi and Scott it should be a shoe in, however we have lost that
loving feeling for Aliens after the 4th unsuccessful installment of the franchise.
June 15th:
We will start with the latest Broadway musical turn Hollywood: Rock of Ages. A country girl meets a city boy and they fall in love. The screenplay based on jukebox movie carries a punch with the cast. Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible), Catherine Zeta-Jones (High Fidelity), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Russel Brand (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Julianne Hough (Footloose), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Diego Boneta (90210) and Will Forte (SNL).
The second movie is That’s My Boy an Adam Sandler movie. So we know crude language, male nudity and maybe even a fart joke. This time around he is joined by Andy Samberg (SNL) and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl). The movie is about a teen that raises his son until he is 18 years of age and then returns to his life unexpectedly. The comedy looks like a classic Sandler movie, so it should be fun.
June 22nd:
June ends with what I will bet will be a hit: Pixar’s Brave.
Brave is the story of Princess Merida, a princess that goes against the rules and has to rely on her bravery and archery to save her kingdom. This is Pixar’s first attempt at a girl hero, but with their reputation I anticipate a great hit for this one. The animation will be incredible and the plot will leaves with a good message that we will ignore a week later.
This concludes what’s worth mentioning for the month of June. There is something for every type of fan, from fairytales, to the universe, to rock stars and a brave princess to finish it off.
