“How do you feel about ponies?”
I was in a parking lot with a friend and a fellow brony when I was asked this random-in-almost-every-scenario question. I could tell there was some underlying reference that I didn’t catch, but I didn’t know how to answer. My ultimate response was a hesitant, “…why?” The aforementioned brony gave a brief but relatively informative breakdown of the show, mentioning some of the puntastic names (i.e. Fillydelphia, Manehattan, etc.), and, if we’re being honest, I wasn’t quite sold. Like most girls, I loved My Little Pony when I was younger. I even had a place for them in my heart of hearts as I went into young adulthood in that Peter Pan “never gonna grow up” kind of way. Despite not having watched the movies or the shows due to my ever-lasting tomboy phase, the ponies never failed to make me smile. But would I, as a young adult, be captivated by this show like some of my peers seem to be?
When I was invited to the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Royal Wedding that took place in Los Angeles this past weekend, I hadn’t had the chance to even catch an episode before making the trip up. I was still skeptical about its appeal, but I was pretty excited to be part of the event. Needless to say, it didn’t disappoint. Everyone involved was in the same magical mindset. The amount of effort and attention to detail exhibited were both obvious and widely appreciated.
From the different activity stations (i.e. Rainbow Dash’s Horseshoe toss, and Pinkie Pie & Apple Jack’s Cake Confectionary- where guests could decorate their own mini-wedding cake) to the overall, dare I say, “magical” energy that was epidemic in nature, it would have been near impossible to not be overwhelmed by glittery joy. All of this was just icing on the cake that was how surprisingly endearing the show ended up being. Children and adults alike can find something to enjoy while watching “everypony” trot, prance, cleverly-reference-random-pop-culture, and sometimes sing their way through this episode’s dilemma.
As a former non- believer of the show’s appeal, I highly suggest watching an episode before forming an opinion. I had an exceptional experience at this event. The general child-like joy converted me, and I hope to attend many a pony-party in the future. Ultimately, it’s easy to get lost in being an adult, but always remember that you’re never too old to enjoy a little magic.
Remember to watch the season finale of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic “Royal Wedding” on The Hub network this saturday at 1 pm Eastern.
