DVD Review: 15th Anniversary Edition- Neverwhere

by Brenda Waldrop, Books Editor

BBC Studios has just released the 15th Anniversary Edition of their adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere on DVD.   Known to film audiences for hit films like Stardust and Coraline, and for his groundbreaking comics, graphic novels, and books, the unique miniseries Neverwhere was Gaiman’s first foray into the world or television.

If like me, you’ve been following Gaiman since the first Sandman comics hit the shelves, you’ll remember when this series was not only just available in VHS, but if you lived in “the Colonies” like I do, you had to have a VCR that could convert it from PAL format!  This new 15th Anniversary Edition of Neverwhere on DVD is remastered to bring the world of London Below into new and exciting clarity.  Packed with extras like a new commentary with Neil Gaiman, the co-creator Lenny Henry, and producer Clive Brill.

Special Features

My favorite Neverwhere extra, undoubtedly due to the untold hours I spent playing original book and dice Role Playing Games growing up, is the fold out map of London Below (Look closely at the layout and you’ll see a surprise), tucked inside the DVD case cover to be spread out and physically marveled over while watching Door, Richard, The Marquis de Carabas, and Hunter make their way from Knightsbridge to The Floating Market, along the Earl’s Court and into The Labyrinth of the Beast as they search for The Angel Islington, and fight to stay alive in the wondrous, secretive, and magical London Below.

Overall

Neverwhere is a magical tale told only as Neil Gaiman could tell it, where the mundane is magical, and nothing is every exactly as it seems.  If you’ve never seen this series, it’s a must see for all fantasy fans, and if you have seen it, I promise your old VCR copies just won’t measure up to this!
