Last weekend The Walking Dead shambled back into our living rooms and our hearts (and braaains). The 90-minute premiere led our group of survivors down the road to ruin, where they hit a dead end. As you no doubt know already, one of their number didn’t return after a zombie chase, and everyone worked together to search. Of course this led to the explosive cliff-hanger ending where a beloved character gets quite a dear surprise.
Beware minor spoilers!
As The Walking Dead Season Two Episode Two opens, we learn what has caused such unrest, and that moves the story and draws our characters, group by group, to Herschel’s farm. As we’ve learned from the first season, AMC’s The Walking Dead is not following the same chain of events that we’ve read for years in The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. In fact, fans who are caught up on the comic book series may see some things in the beginning of Season Two that they weren’t expecting for eighty-some issues worth of comic story.
At the farm we meet a big group including Herschel (Scott Wilson – The X-Files, CSI, Monster), Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince – Murder One, X-Files, The Cape, The Mentalist), and Vivian Volkoff herself (Lauren Cohan – Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Chuck) as Maggie Greene. Will she and Glenn hook up in this universe? I sure hope so. Also regarding character relationships, Andrea’s less than pleasant attitude toward Dale might be my biggest disappointment in the series.
A potential disappointment is the foreshadowing that we may lose T-Dog to the injury he sustained in the season premiere. IronE Singleton has such amazing screen presence it would be a shame to lose him from the cast.
Another unexpected delight was Norman Reedus’ portrayal of Daryl Dixon. As that character wasn’t in the comic, I had assumed that he was just a redshirt. His scenes are some of my favorites.
Setting us up for episode three, we leave Shane and Otis in a precarious situation. Will they get back in time? Will Otis get out some stilts and an ice pick? Why are the walkers running? Will any of these questions be answered next week?
AMC continues to produce the best shows on television, and with this new season of The Walking Dead, we are reminded that AMC shows just keep getting better. Clearly AMC knows it, as this episode they leave us an Easter Egg that hints at The Walking Dead possibly sharing a universe with another AMC show. Did you catch it?
