DVD Review: Thor

On September 13th, Thor makes his home on DVD and Blu-ray!

With a star studded castcast, Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Natalie Portman (Star Wars Episodes I-III, Black Swan, V for Vendetta) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Beowulf); fantastic visuals and epic fight sequences, Thor was the perfect way to kick off the summer of action movies.

Don’t see this movie if you are going to try and compare it to just the recent Marvel films released (Iron Man, Iron Man II, The Incredible Hulk) you will be disappointed. However if you look at it comparing it to every Marvel film released in the last twenty years, then you will very satifyied. This falls in line as probably the fourth best Marvel film to date (including all the X-men movies, Spider-man films, horrible Daredevil and Elektra films). Why you ask? It has better acting than, way better costumes and visuals, not to mention it at least sticks to the original story somewhat without making CRAZY changes. Overall it’s just much better script writing.

This epic adventure takes us from the visually stunning Asgard to present day Earth where the Mighty Thor, finds himself banished from his homeland. Im not going to ruin any of the story and tell you why or how he got banished or how he plans on restoring his good name. Just know that the movie is fun to watch. Its full of badass, hammer swinging action with a little bit of romance sprinkled in so your girlfriend will want to watch it too.

Special Features:

-4 Deleted Scenes – Thor and Loki get some time alone to talk about their conquests and their hopes and dreams.  The Warriors Three get some time to relax and enjoy the party. Lady Sif gets in a burn. Thor gets a beer with his new drinking buddy. Super exciting deleted scenes that definitely will not be missed from the feature film…

-Road to The Avengers Featurette- This short video includes video from the 2010 Comic-Con Avengers Panel (where the cast and creative team are introduced on stage) as well as cuts from all of the Marvel films that show glimpses of the heroes who will make up the live action version of The Avengers.

Overall

Thor was a solid attempt at bringing the mystical world of Marvel Comics to life on the big screen. While the love story was a little too heavy at times, the story as a whole definitely held up well in live action. We can only hope that the character of Donald Blake (Thor’s alter ego from the comics) is integrated into the sequel.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
