Video Game Review: Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012

by C P

During Comic Con, I bumped into the reps from Wizards of the Coast. I was lucky enough to score a promo code to play Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. Now if you’ve played the more recent version (which is free to Playstation Network Plus members) you’ll remember how fun it was. It did have some things that needed to be fixed though…specifically the length of the game, it was too short.

Now here am, after playing nothing but this game for three straight weeks. I still can’t put down the controller! Maybe I’m just ultra nerdy because I’m hooked, but I think it’s pretty freaking fun (or how I like to say PFF!) So you ask me “You’re playing Magic the Gathering?” I respond with “PFF, Yeah!” Anywho lets dig in.

First of all there are a TON of decks in the game, giving you almost a never ending supply of matches you can play and lots of variety in ways to crush and defeat your opponents. Additionally, there are more bosses and game modes.

You start off in campaign mode and choose your deck. As you defeat eat Planeswalker, you are given the choice for side missions which challenge your ability to work under pressure. Each match you win, you unlock a card(s) for your deck. Each deck has about 16 cards you can unlock. After you play through the campaign the first time, you are given two new options “Nemesis” and “Revenge”.

Nemesis pits you up against a massively strong Planeswalker. Lucky for you, you can work together with two teammates either AI or Online from PSN or XBox Live. I’ve yet to play with anyone that can actually help me defeat a Planeswalker.

Revenge puts you in a second round of one-on-one Planeswalker match ups, except this time their decks are upgraded with some stronger creatures.

You also have a custom game format where you can make your games to your liking and play with AI or Online friends.

On a side note, this game had stirred up my nostalgic feelings for the analog version of the game. With that, I’ve decided to take up Magic the Gathering yet again. I dusted off my old box full of some great and epic decks. Unfortunately, most tournament gameplay requires newer cards, which means that Wizards of the Coast has drawn me to spend more money with them. It’s a GREAT business plan on their part.
