SDCC2011: Video Game News: Darksiders II

by C P

We were invited to a special little shindig during comic con to check out the latest update on Darksiders II. Let me just start off by saying…the mashed potatoes at the party were delicious. Also…HOLY SHII.

So in the first game, you played as war, which was tons of fun destroying everything in your path. Now you play as Death. I know you may be thinking, WTF, why did you change the main character you idiots???? I thought that too at first, but after I realized that the Darksiders story line was so complex that it only made sense to have the next game through the eyes other another horseman. Im not going to go too much into the story, but honestly, the gameplay was distracting me from what was actually being said.

The gameplay actually looked very fluid and fun. It seemed like a mix of Assassin’s Creed and God of War. You are equipped at the start with two sick looking scythes but you can use other weapons too, like a BFH, or Big Fucking Hammer (I’m coining that phrase right now, if its used in game, I made it up), throwing weapons and more. So there is a ton of variety on how you can beat the crap out of your enemies. What’s also nice is the combos that you can pull off and how quickly you can flip between your primary and secondary weapons during them. Its really like there are just endless possibilities here.

The world itself is skinned quite nicely and is a vast open land where you acutally can make use of your deathly steed, Despair. Additionally we were informed about the power up system and skill branches which will really hone in the RPG aspect of the game.

To sum it up, its going to be released next year and seems like its going to be a pretty fun game to play. If you enjoyed the original, then you will definitely appreciate the sequel since they really aren’t reinventing the wheel with this game. With that, I’ll leave you with a trailer….enjoy!
