Now you can catch up on the Complete Second Season of USA’s hit summer series: White Collar on DVD!
There is an old saying that it takes a thief to catch a thief; well, in this case it takes a con to catch a con. Smooth as marble, with a suit to match and a way with his hat, Neal Caffrey (Matt Bomer) is one of the best con-artists in the world. Nearly finished with his first prison sentence, Neal gets a visit from his girlfriend, Kate (Alexandra Daddario), telling him that she is moving on. With this news, Neal takes it upon himself to cut his prison sentence a little short to find her and get some answers. After he gets caught for a second time by special agent Peter Burke (Tim DeKay), Neal makes a deal with him and the FBI. Neal helps Burke close his newest case and catch the villainous Dutchman in return for him serving his prison sentence in service to the FBI’s white collar division. Of course, Neal, being the con-man that he is, he has an ulterior motive to get out of prison: To find his long-lost girlfriend Kate. With that, the creation of a beautiful and unusual partnership begins, and White Collar is born.
The first season finale of USA Network’s original series, White Collar, leaves us with Neal’s girlfriend killed by an unknown mystery man, and a music box that holds the key to find who is responsible. In the sophomore season, Neil and Peter, along with their crew, try to solve the mystery around Kate’s murder. They try and unlock the past to find clues, decipher what the music box really is, all while working countless white collar crimes. Crimes that range in every episode from fake bonds to armed robbery, to political corruption, to old enemies, making this action packed dramedy a very interesting crime series.
Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay are joined by a great cast that gives life to the variety of characters, and it makes this series exceptional. My favorite character is Mozzie, played by Willie Garson (Sex and The City). Mozzie is Neal’s most trusted friend and co-conspirator, who walks the fine line between both sides of the law. When Neal needs to break the rules to get their man, Mozzie is the one who blurs them for him. In the second season’s episode, “Forging Bonds”, Neal and Peter remember their past to discover the answers about the mastermind behind Kate’s murder. In this episode, we find out that Mozzie is the one that introduces and teaches Neal how to con for bigger and better prizes. We also see the first time that Peter meets Neal, who is nicknamed James Bonds, and the first case in which Neal himself is the biggest suspect!
Other main characters include the beautiful Tiffany Thiessen (Saved By The Bell, Beverly Hills 90210) as Elizabeth Burke, Peter’s wife, (or as Mozzie would say, “Mrs. Suit”.) Tiffany plays an Events Coordinator very in love with her husband, so she helps him balance his work and life. In the episode “Power Play”, Elizabeth’s client’s assistant is suspicious that her boss may be responsible for the many blackouts that the city has experienced – In the middle of a heat wave, no less. When she turns to her husband for help, Peter gets stuck in traffic, and Neal has to pretend to be Peter. The lie creates a role reversal in the episode making Peter need Mozzie and Neal’s landlord June (Diahann Carrol) to help him become a conman and get hired by Elizabeth’s client. When Peter successfully completes his mission, he has found a new respect for Neal’s prior job.
Besides Marsha Thomason (Las Vegas, Lost), who plays Diana Barrigan (one of Peter’s FBI Agents) and Sharif Atkins (ER), who plays Clinton Jones (another one of the Bureau’s Agents), Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill) joins the cast as Sara Ellis. Sara is an Insurance Investigator that testifies against Neal at his trial. Peter and Neal are also teamed up with her in an investigation about stolen Japanese bonds in the episode “Unfinished Business”.
The special features in the DVD set are distributed in all discs, and include deleted scenes and a gag reel, which are incredibly funny and give you an inside look on how witty the cast really is. It also includes the classic voice-over commentary of three of the episodes. My favorite special feature is Slick Wilie, a featurette that goes into the world of White Collar trying to figure out who Mozzie really is. The featurette includes interviews with the cast, and Willie Garson himself to find the answer. Another cool feature is Here’s the Deal: Anatomy of an Episode, where we go inside the inner workings of an episode. From how does the writing of an episode start to how they shooting to filming the episode itself, this featurette go very deep into the White Collar world.
The second season of White Collar answers all of the questions we had about Kate, his murderer and the why’s. But we are left with a whole new set of new ones. Neal Caffrey is one of my favorite characters in modern television and Mozzie is the most interesting of them all. The writing of the show is witty, the cinematography is beautiful, and the story is fresh. I just cannot get enough of this great cast and great show.
