Blu-ray Review: Benny & Joon

Thanks for the couch. Um… Mike made me sleep under the sink.

Not being a Johnny Depp fan – oh who am I kidding, Depp is a dreamboat, even when he is portraying an eccentric cinemaphile in this romantic comedy film. Benny & Joon, originally released in 1993, is now digitally remastered in high resolution blu-ray glory! You can see every beautiful pore on Johnny Depp’s gorgeous face. I know what you are thinking, “You have a boy-crush on Johnny Depp”. No that’s not the case, I’m actually the one that got a restraining order placed on him before he got one on me.

Benny & Joon is a cute story about an auto-shop owner, Benjamin “Benny” Pearl and his “eccentric” (though it seems a little more like mentally instable) sister, Juniper “Joon”. Benjamin lives a simple life of fixing cars and playing poker with his pals. His sister Joon enjoys painting and scaring away the housekeepers. In a game of chance, Benny gets stuck taking his friend’s very eccentric cousin, Sam, into his care. What follows is a series of eye-opening experiences for both Benny & Joon where they learn about themselves and fall in love (not with each other, get your mind out of the gutter). If Joon can get set her issues aside and accept Sam’s love, perhaps there is hope for a somewhat normal, happy life.

Special Features

– Audio Commentary
The audio commentary is pretty boring and not worth the listen.
– Deleted Footage
The deleted footage isn’t that spectacular and doesn’t add much value to the movie itself.
– Music Video
SO GOOD. I would walk 500 miles to view it again. Check out the lead singer’s odd looking bulge.
– Costume and Make-up Test/ Stunt Reel
This is so boring to watch (I mean the parts that aren’t screen tests of Johnny Depp). This really isn’t needed on the disc at all, either.

Overview
If you are a fan of romantic comedies, or just a fan of watching Johnny Depp on screen, this is definitely a movie you need to see. It’s a little slow to start, but chock full of laughs throughout the whole film. It’s a refreshing take on the genre because the main characters have issues that are deeper than hangups on old flames and such. Depp’s portrayal of Sam is enjoyable and enticing to watch. The soundtrack is full of some great hits that will definitely bring you back (to where? No clue but I was brought back, too). With a star-studded cast and a great story, there isn’t much more to say other than get your loved one, cozy up on the couch and get ready for a real feel-good film.
