Blu-ray Review: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

All the best babes dig mages.

What may have been inspired many years ago by a viewing of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” short in Disney’s classic Fantasia, has been fleshed out into a full feature film by the magic of Disney.

The plot of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice involves far more than a lazy apprentice whose magically animated mops end up flooding a magician’s study. It seems that in this edition, Merlin’s power has been passed down to a kid, Dave (Jay Baruchel – How to Train Your Dragon) in the modern age and it’s up to Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage – Ghost Rider) to make sure that the villainous Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina – Spider-Man 2) does not interfere with Dave’s destiny or his blossoming relationship with Becky Barnes (Teresa Palmer – Bedtime Stories).

Sound and Video

As with any Disney film, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has a beautiful soundtrack, featuring just the right amount of dialog to effects to music balance in its 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio playback. As for video, this film naturally does not disappoint, providing the appropriately colorful magical palette with which to paint the picture in 1080p resolution.

Extras

The 2-Disc Combo Pack contains the following extras on the Blu-ray:

  • Magic in the City
  • The Science of Sorcery
  • Making Magic Real
  • The World’s Coolest Car
  • 5 Deleted Scenes
  • Outtakes

…And these on the included DVD:

  • The Making of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
  • Deleted Scene

Overall

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is a film for all ages in the classic Disney style: accessible to all, and told in a manner to try and remain as timeless as possible. Sure, this story doesn’t take chances by getting edgy, but if you can choke down the silly names they give people and things (like “The Prime Merlinian”), this should suit just about anyone. The only consideration is: Is this a buy or a rent? This is no Mary Poppins. It’s sweet and contains plenty of magical excitement, but I watched it once and really have no need to see it again. I figure this is a great gift for the holidays for any family with kids, especially if they missed this in theaters.

ComicsOnline gives The Sorcerer’s Apprentice 3 out of 5 magical destinies.
