DVD Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Things aren't ever easy as a teenager, as we all find out at once we get there. But Percy Jackson has a lot more on his plate than most people: ADHD keeps him from being able to sit still or keep his mind from wandering; dyslexia keeps him from being able to read properly, which frustrates him endlessly; and a jerk of a step-father who has done nothing but make life for Percy miserable makes him question what exactly it was that makes his mom stay with him.

But add onto that heaping mess that Percy is the son of Poseidon, the Grecian god of the sea that Percy thought only existed in legends and textbooks, and things get much more complicated. Especially when the king of the gods, Zeus, believes Percy has stolen the master lightning bolt that all other bolts are made from. High school sort of seems to pale in comparison, doesn't it?

Summary
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief is based off of the award-winning series by Rick Riordan, and it follows Percy (Perseus) Jackson as he goes from normal teenage boy with a few frustrating problems to the son of Poseidon and from there, The Lightning Thief. The things he only thought existed in history are now all coming to life full-force, from the minotaur to Medusa, satyrs to demi-gods, Olympus to the Underworld. And it turns out not very much of it is going to be friendly to him.

After finding out that he's a demi-god, he ends up at Camp Half-Blood with his friend Grover (who turns out to be a Satyr sent to watch over Percy), a magically protected camp for other half-god children to live and learn about their godly parents, their history, and to train to fight the monsters running amok in the human world. This camp is the only safe place for demi-gods to live and not attract all those monsters that are bent on destroying these children of the gods.

While at camp, after receiving threats to return Zeus's master bolt or face death, Percy decides it's up to him to clear his name and get his mother back from Hades's grasp in the Underworld. He sets out on a quest across America with Grover and a new friend, Annabeth Chase, facing obstacles along the way, testing their powers, and ultimately fighting to stop a possible war between the gods by finding the real Lightning Thief and returning the bolt to Zeus.
