PSN Game Add-On Review: Zen Pinball Earth Defense Table

You’ll want to play with these steel balls.

When Zen Pinball released this time last year, it was unmatched in its realistic physics and authentic feel.  Its four original tables offered a lot of gameplay options along with many reasons to keep fighting the scoreboards.  In addition to that, it offered robust multiplayer modes and Playstation Eye support.  Since its release, Sony has offered continual support with the Street Fighter Table, the Ninja Gaiden Sigma Table, and now the latest addition, the Earth Defense Table.

You must see it in motion.

Not content with the simple feel of the previous tables, Zen studios has kicked it up a notch with this one.  Set up like a 50’s era robot alien invasion, the Earth Defense Table offers more ramps, more moving parts, more hidden scoring options and more excitement.  Compared to the previous tables, this one feels less authentic and more like a video game with its constantly moving robot, ever present flying saucer, ball firing army tank and occasional runaway train.  I have no complaints toward the departure this table was so much fun to play on, I forgot its lack of realism and just enjoyed its uniqueness.

Good luck saving the girl this time.

The greatest and most notable feature of the Earth Defense Table is the giant robot hovering over it while you play.  Sink a ball too early and he fires one back at you. Score a large point total quickly and he starts firing shots from his other arm that causes the ramps to spark.  Sink a ball in the tank and it fires it back at the big guy.  Sit still for too long and he’ll turn his head into a snow globe or play Pong with its mouth and eyes.  It’s great to see what it’ll do next.  Zen Studios really pushed the robots use to the max and it felt fresh every game.

Yes, it is as awesome as it looks.

Overall

Zen Pinball is by far the best Pinball game available on the PSN and the Earth Defense Table is a great addition.  The new features really set it apart from the previous tables and offer continual reasons to play again and again.  At $2.49 there’s no reason not to pick up this essential table.

ComicsOnline gives Zen Pinball’s Earth Defense Table 5 out of 5 robot invasions.
