Manga Review: Tegami Bachi (Letter Bee), Volume 2

A man-made star illuminates only part of the world of Amberground.  Split into three different caste systems, only Letter Bees (and a few other government agencies) can pass between the sections.  Akatsuki is in the center, and is illuminated completely by the star/sun; it is also strictly regulated by the government as to who can enter.  Then there's Yuusari, where it is mostly twilight, and where the middle class lives.  The lowest class lives in the complete night time of Yodaka, where the dangerous creatures, Gaichuu, are found in great numbers.

After Lag Seeing was left in Yodaka when his mother was taken by the government for a yet to be explained reason, Gauche Suede was the Letter Bee who delivered Lag to his aunt.  Gauche and Lag became close, and almost as soon as Gauche left, Lag began training to become a Letter Bee. Now, Lag has finally made it to Yuusari, where he is to take his entrance test.   At the Beehive (the Letter Bee headquarters), Lag is tested, and out of 66 applicants, Lag completes the test with the fastest record ever!  Then Lag discovers that Gauche, the one who inspired him to be a Letter Bee, is no longer a Bee.

Overall

Somewhere along the journey to Yuusari, Lag and his "Dingo" (an animal companion who helps fight Gaichuu), Niche, pick up a new traveling partner, Steak (see below image).  Steak is a small, cat-like creature that is literally all mouth.  His mouth divides his body into a top half and a bottom half.  He's really funny.  He is like a small dog that has the personality of an old, grumpy man.  Then, after he does anything that he thinks is heroic, he has that, "Yep, I'm just that cool" face on, in the background.  Steak is the easter egg Anime/Manga/Gaming fans love to find.

The scenery is great.  It's a beautiful night sky, with stars!  Most of the time in manga, I notice that when it's nighttime, the sky is just black.  But, in Tegami Bachi, there are different sized stars that decorate the sky.  It's beautiful.   Just about everything in the setting is amazing, the people, as well.  Tegami Bachi is one of my favorite series when it comes to the art.

Steak

I love this series.  I had started reading the chapters when they were released, until I got the first manga volume.  The excitement that I felt the whole time I was reading was amazing.  Then, when I finished the first volume, I almost cried, because the second volume wasn't out.  Well, now it is.  The second volume is even better then the first.  Mostly I think it's because of the new characters, the new (as well as more interesting) conflict, and, of course,  Steak.  Also, I really like the Steampunk/gothic tone to the series, my two most favorite settings/genres.

Tegami Bachi has excellent art, exciting characters, and an exceptional plot.  I can easily see this series becoming a Classic.  I would recommend this series to anyone 10 and over.  I can't wait for Volume 3 to arrive!!!
