DVD Review: The Sarah Silverman Program Season 2 Voume 2

Up next on Comedy Central, The Sarah Silverman Program! The 2nd part of the season 2 is upon us after the end of the writers strike with more jokes, awkward moments, and guest appearances. The Sarah Silverman Program Season 2 Voume 2 is not a typical sitcom release and it makes for a unique viewing experience that fans of the show as well as her off-the-wall style of comedy will certainly appreciate.

First off, as a warning to those who haven’t seen this show, it’s bat-shit crazy.  In one episode, you’re likely to see Sarah reminisce about peeing in a Pringles can, sue an entire country, give birth to a flying green monster, or marry her dog.  It’s like Seinfeld was in the 90’s, it’s a show about nothing. There is no ongoing plot to the series and none of it makes any sense, but if that doesn’t bother you, you’ll find it is an incredibly funny show.

The show features the same five main characters throughout each episode: Sarah, her sister Laura, Jay, her “Gaybors,” Steve and Brian. Each has their own personalities with Sarah being the always irresponsible one and Jay and Laura just the opposite.  Brian and Steve are the atypical gay couple with their own quirks generally causing arguments between the two.  The show also has loads of guest appearances throughout featuring Missi Pyle, Mark Cohen, and Lyndsey Stoddart, to name a few.

Highlights

The Sarah Silverman Program might possibly be the king of producing an awkward situation.  In every episode there are several moments that make you cringe at what is said or done.  Every time Jay (Jay Johnston) opens his mouth is usually one of those moments.  He is easily one of the funniest characters of the show, not only in what he does or says, but in his look and demeanor.  He’s a proverbial man-child and each opportunity his police work is used is extremely funny to watch. Watching him “make out” with a pony in the “Making new Friends” episode is positively hilarious.

My favorite episodes of the lot were “High, it’s Sarah” and “There’s no place like homeless.”  “High” has Sarah smoking pot for the first time with Brian.  They commit a bunch of random acts of stupidity while high and Sarah leaves herself voicemails reminding her to follow up on her acts while sober. One such act is kidnapping a CEO of a large company. “Homeless” Has Sarah losing her apartment keys and living with Mike, a homeless friend.  She finds a way to turn living on the street into a positive thing despite how ridiculously bad it is.  The “watching tv” bit is particularly awesome.

Special Features

We get this as Season 2B because of the writers’ strike and it comes as a two-disc collection with only ten episodes across both discs.  Despite what the packaging said, episode one through four were on the first disc and five through ten were on the second.  Special features are done differently here with most of them contained on the first disc in a section called Odds N’ Ends.  They include behind the scenes featurettes along with some deleted scenes as well.  They aren’t organized in any way and it’s not always clear whether you’re watching a featurette or deleted scene.  None of either are of finished quality and the deleted scenes are usually just small extensions of other scenes that were used.

Commentary is available for every episode with most of done by writer/director Rob Schrab and writer Daniel Sterling with an occasional track done with Sarah or the other cast members.  Most of the time the cast stays on subject and it’s all very amusing.  If you’re already a fan of the show, it’s another reason to watch the episodes again.  The directors explaining how they came up with some of the jokes is pretty interesting. The second disc features three webisodes called Fantastimart, Sarah’s Magic Purse, and Steve and Brian. They are animated and run between five and ten minutes individually. They feature the same type of humor from the show and take a cue from Family Guy in their outrageousness.

Overall

The Sarah Silverman Program Season 2 Voume 2 offers lots of odd humor, racial stereotypes, and plenty of awkward situations. If that doesn’t turn you off, there’s plenty to love here.

ComicsOnline gives The Sarah Silverman Program Season 2 Voume 2 four out of five Gaybors.
