The series Nana is a popular manga turned anime turned live action movie about two girls who share the same name but are total opposites when it comes to their personalities; one a punk rocker who talks tough, the other a bubbly girl who follows and is faithful.
Nana Box Set Volume 3 continues the relationships of the members of BLAST and Trapnest and shows the continuing rise of BLAST from their signing and first big show. This volume is mainly focusing on Nana O. and her struggles in finding happiness in her life.
Highlights
Following Hachi (Nana K.) hooking up with Trapnest bassist, Takumi, the drama really starts getting interesting. Not only because Nana O.’s band (BLAST) gets signed, but the relationship between Hachi and Nobu starts to evolve beyond simple friendship. Even the not majorly important characters like Reira (Trapnest’s lead singer) and Shin (BLAST’s resident playboy member) have their moments.
This whole volume is mainly telling the story of Nana K. Which is somewhat of a shame; while yes there is a lot going on with Nana K., I would have liked to see more involvement between Ren and Nana O. The love triangle between Nana K., Nobu, and Takumi really gets a boost with an addition that makes the viewer feel for Nana K.
Overall
For a romance series, Nana is nice. The romance story isn’t forced and everything flows organically. The actions of both Nanas have consequences that affect the characters in realistic ways. While not a big fan of the romance genre, I will give Ai Yazawa credit for making characters relatable and a story that even I enjoyed watching.
For any fans of the romance genre, this is a must buy. If you are a fan of rock music, I would suggest watching just for the music. But the romance is engrossing enough for any person to enjoy. Honestly, it’s the music that hooks me; I wish the bands were real. The music is that good.
