Are you anxious for the new season of Doctor Who this spring? Possibly you’re upset that Primevil is over? Maybe you’re even waiting for the next season of Being Human (I know I am.)? Well on January 2nd BBC America premieredDemons, and it may just fill that sci-fi/ thriller craving.
Episode One: They Bite starts with Rupert Galvin (Philip Glenister – Britain’s Life on Mars) shows up to tell Luke (Christian Cooke – Echo Beach) that he is the last in the Van Helsing lineage, made famous by vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. Ruperts plan is to train Luke to follow in the family business of demon hunter. Assisting with the training is blind concert pianist Mina Harker (Zoë Tapper – Hex), descendant of Jonathan Harker. Also in the mix is girlfriend Ruby (Holliday “Holly” Grainger – Waking the Dead) who knows more than she wants to, and mom Jenny (Saskia Wickham – Waking the Dead) who know nothing of her sons after dark activities. All this and school, and teenage boy stuff.
The premier introduces the imp like creature, or a type 3 demon. But they’re small potatoes compared to the type 7 demon henchman Redlip (Martin Hancock – Hannibal Rising), and type 12 bounty hunter Gladiolus Thrip (Mackenzie Crook – Solomon Kane) that have come to town to stop young Luke before he can get started.
I enjoyed the first episode though I noticed a plot resemblance to the infamous Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I can forgive them for that as long as the stories remain fairly original and the characters are fresh and interesting. I also look forward to an array of new and cool weapons and gadgets. That and I’m a sucker for a British accent.
If you missed the premier episode you can catch it next Saturday right before the next episode airs on BBC America.
ComicsOnline gives Demons 4 type 10 stars out of 5.
