TV Review: Chuck Season Three (Episodes 1-5)

The fans have spoken and Chuck, one of the best shows on television, has made its return to NBC for Season Three!

Thanks to an amazing fan campaign and the decline of people who actually care about Heroes, NBC realized the importance of this little spy show and has truly given it a chance to shine. Chuck advertisements have been all over the place and these days, marketing is everything. When I arrived home last week I found a Fedex box from NBC Universal with the Chuck Press Kit, containing the first five episodes of Season Three, a secret spy kit, digital voice changer, and super secret spy glasses! The episodes alone would have been cool enough, but I do love my spy kit.

Previously on Chuck:
For those not in the know, Chuck tells the fish out of water story of an
ordinary guy who works at the local Buy More when he stumbles upon something huge. A computer with all the nation's secrets in it gets downloaded into his head and turns his life upside down as he enters the world of secret agents, spies and corrupt shadow organizations, all while trying to find a way out of this mess.

With the fate of the series in question, the creators decided to wrap up almost every major storyline before the end of the season, but left a few interesting plot points open just in case – it's a good thing they did!
At the end of Season Two, Chuck manages to get the super-computer out of his head, only to have it replaced by the new and improved version, which also includes new abilities such as Kung-Fu, a skill demonstrated in the season finale.

ChuckSeason Three:

Picking up six months after the incredible finale, we find Chuck training with the government to become a real spy. This is a huge sacrifice and causes Sarah to distance herself from Chuck, as she feels that he is giving up the best part of himself in the process. With the evil Chevy Chase led organization known as "Fulcrum" out of the picture, the team must stop a new criminal agency called "The Ring" from destroying society as we know it.

The season does start off a little slow, but that is mainly because the creators had to establish the new status quo after having wrapped up so

much of the story. Episodes 1 and 2 really establish the new situation and help explain what our favorite characters have been through since we last saw them, while episodes 3 through 5 really get back into the fun stuff – stuff that made this show so great in the first place.

Side note: Make sure you go back and rewatch "Chuck vs Operation Awesome" because I really feel that the best moment so far this season is Captain Awesome's explaination to his wife as to why he was missing…

Cast Changes:
There are a few noteable changes this season…
-Morgan's girlfriend Ana Wu (Julia Wang) is quite absent from the new season and is only given a throw away line to explain her absence…

-Emmett Milbarge, the newly appointed Manager/Ruler of the Buy More is another casualty of budget cuts, but at least he makes an appearance in the new season.

Superman Return's Brandon Routh joins the cast as new secret spy Daniel Shaw.

Smallville's Kristen Kreuk joins the season as a potential love interest for Chuck in episode five "Chuck Versus First Class".

Overall:
Chuck is back and the show couldn't have returned soon enough. The show was initially granted a 13 episode third season, but NBC made a great decision and added another 6 episodes to the order! If you aren't watching Chuck, you need to stop whatever it is you are doing and go out and get the first two seasons and marathon them. You won't regret it.

ComicsOnline gives Chuck – Season Three (Episodes 1-5) 5 out of 5 amazing series that we are glad to have back on the air.
