DVD Review: SGT. Frog Season 2 Part 1

Previously in season one: a froggy invasion of massive proportion was begun. The invasion was led by Sergeant Keroro. While Keroro and his four platoon members were on a reconaissance mission, an SOS was accidentally sent to the masses of troops waiting just outside of the atmosphere. The frog army quickly went back to their home planet, leaving Keroro and his platoon behind, but if there is one thing that frog aliens don’t do, it is give up. So after reuniting with his platoon Keroro continued his plans to conquer Pekopon (A.K.A. Earth). Keroro’s plans varied from seizing all of Pekopon’s money to flaming death gorillas, but due to the interference of Keroro’s host family, they all failed (they probably would have failed anyway). Yet don’t worry, I'm sure Keroro has more insane plans to fill up at least a few more seasons. So now get ready for SGT. Frog Season Two Part 1!

This season Keroro will do much more than just make Gundam models and try to conquer this world. Keroro also deals with the touchy subject of relationships, from the bonds between a frog and his cat, young “love” between a socially awkward boy and a rich girl, and the ever controversial “daddy problems”.

Highlights

With conquering the world aside, there is only one other thing that can draw Keroro’s platoon together. That magnificent activity is watching cartoons, but more specifically, watching the new “Captain Frog” anime series (based off the manga that the mother of his host family writes). The first episode of “Captain Frog”  is so jawdropping spectactular that the next day Keroro goes out and buys two of each of the new Captain Frog action figures. Apparently spending half of that month’s budget on toys isn’t just to buy toys, supposedly it is to show how popularity of a show can bring in a ton of money from merchandise (but then why did he need to buy two of each?). On that note, Keroro and the platoon decide to make an anime, but they have one problem –  making an anime is no walk in the park. So in short it is a cartoon about making cartoons inspired by a cartoon that was a parody of the cartoon.

Overall

As always SGT Frog sucks you in like a black hole due to its sheer awesomeness. One of the things that makes it so awesome is that you know how each episode will play out. It’s not about seeing how it will end but it’s the journey getting there. Also nerdy references pop up everywhere in SGT Frog and any nerd would appreciate them. As time has gone on, I have also noticed that the more I watch this series, the better it gets because it pushes the boundaries of normalcy.  Once again, SGT Frog has invaded my house, and I suggest you bow down and submit to their sheer awesomeness.

ComicsOnline gives SGT Frog Season 2 Part 1 4.5 out 5 exploding Gundam models.
