DVD Review: Case Closed: Countdown to Heaven

Jimmy Kudo was a famous high school detective, until one day, while Jimmy and his friend, Rachel Moore, were at an amusement park. Jimmy had an unfortunate run-in with some men in black. Because they were being suspicious, Jimmy had decided to follow them. As one of the men was making a deal with another person, Jimmy didn’t notice that the other one was sneaking up behind him. Before he knew it, the men in black were making Jimmy take an untested poison. Instead of killing Jimmy, the drug reverted Jimmy’s age. Now living as a young grade school student,  Jimmy goes under the alias Conan Edogawa, because if his attackers knew Jimmy was still alive, he is sure they would come after him and finish the job.

Now, Conan lives with his friend Rachel and her father Richard. Conan still solves crimes, but he does it through Richard. Luckily for Conan, Richard is a detective, although not a very good one, due to the fact that he makes false accusations on little or no evidence. Although when Conan solves a case, he uses his wristwatch stun gun to knock out Richard. Then Conan uses his bowtie voice synthesizer to solve the case as Richard. Because of that, Richard received the name the "sleeping sleuth". With each case that Conan solves, he hopes to accumulate more clues about the men in black and this time they are right under his nose.

After Conan and his friends, the Junior Detective League, go camping with Dr. Agasa, the man who makes all of Conan's gadgets, they decide to stop by the tallest towers in Japan. These towers are also known as the Closest Place to Heaven. Just when they arrive so did Richard and Rachel. Apparently Richard went to college with Tokiwa Mio, the lady who owns the towers. Due to Richard’s connections, everyone is invited to the grand opening of the towers. After the festivities commence, there was a grand unveiling of a new painting of Mount Fuji. As the curtains open to reveal the painting, more than just the painting is there. Hanging from the ceiling is Tokiwa. This appears to be the third of a string of serial murders, all involving the towers, each crime scene marked with a sake cup. Is it the men in black, or someone else?

Overall

This is an amazing movie, better than any mystery movie that I have ever seen. Even compared to other Case Closed movies, this one is a head above the rest. The mystery is very complex. Because all the obvious suspects get murdered, you have no idea who did it, and it’s not someone who’s completely random. I also really enjoyed the fact that the men in black were actually in this movie, due to the fact that out of all of the Case Closed  episodes and movies I have seen, this is the only one that included them. Another good thing about this movie is that anyone could watch it and enjoy it and not be confused. Even though this one is great for newcomers to the Case Closed story, old fans of the series will enjoy it because of the backstory for some of the characters that is revealed. This movie is a great file of the Case Closed story and would make a great part of any anime fan’s collection.
