We’ve all seen him before in small roles on Scrubs and Parks and Recreations as well as the recently released Funny People, but Aziz Ansari: Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening is the comedian’s first stand-up show. Now available courtesy of Courtesy of Comedy Central and Paramount Pictures, this stand up special has nothing to do with its title but is a fast paced stand-up act that fans of his small roles as well as his attitude will love.
Highlights
Ansari speaks incredibly fast and switches topics on the fly which I think is awesome. He doesn’t drag out jokes like a lot of other comedians and at times you’ll wonder if he even takes a breath. All of his material feels new and fresh. His jokes range from stabbing for gay rights, tuna juice shots, and child molestation. It’s all extremely vulgar and rude but if that doesn’t bother you, you’ll find something in his act to relate to and you’ll find yourself laughing throughout. The Facebook bit is particularly awesome.
The worst part of the show is that last bit where he plays RAAAAAAAANDY from the film Funny People. The whole bit feels like it doesn’t belong and it was clearly put there to promote the newly released film. The jokes are very sexual, over the top, and not at all funny. I would have rather seen this part as a special feature rather than part of the main act.
Special Features
This single disc DVD features the standup special along with one special feature containing an additional 30 minutes of older stand-up material called the UCB Comedy Death Ray Performance. The extra material is roughly shot in a small room on a stage with about 30 audience members. It’s less scripted and he occasionally asks the audience questions about the show and the topics he talks about. All the material is pretty funny and it would have been nice to see some of it make the main feature instead of the Randy with eight A’s bit.
Overview
Aziz Ansari may not be a household name yet, but I expect that we’ll be seeing a lot more of him over the next few years. His stand-up special is noticeably different in pacing than what most stand up comics are pushing these days and I find that refreshing. The one special feature has some great material that should have made it into the main feature, but instead we get the terrible Randy with eight A’s bit. The rest of the special is top notch and Aziz fans will want to snap this one up.
