Manga Review: Mikansei No. 1

“Hello, everyone! Step right up and see my show!”

In the year 220X, girls will be respectable, modest, and not loud, but one girl stands alone. Neo Takigawa is a high school student who cuts her skirts short and likes to sing when ever she gets a chance. Neo wishes she lived in the 21st century and not the 23rd but when the time space warp is completed all her dreams will come true. One day as Neo is running from her principal, she runs into a storage room. But it was not just any storage room. Inside was a clear tube with a black smoke. Neo isn't able to leave it alone and is absorbed by the smoke, finding herself falling into a guy’s arms. Before this happens, the guy had been talking to a group of guys trying to decided which one would do his pre-show concert. He decided to put Neo with Cowlick Boy, or Saya Kudou. When Neo and Saya start singing, they are quickly booed off stage. The next day the man who Neo fell into, who is the famous singer P-shock, “kidnaps” her and Cowlick Boy- I mean, Saya. P-shock liked their singing so much that he takes them to his recording studio to make a deal with his producer. Now Neo and Saya have just about three months to put on a concert and get a crowd, and if they do they will get a recording contract.

Highlights
Cowlick…Saya isn’t thrilled with the idea of starting a band with Neo. Saya thinks that Neo is an annoying, juvenile little twit and wants nothing to do with her. One day Neo is trying to practice while singing in the park, when Saya walks by with a bike he found in a trash pile. One of the kids that is listening to Neo realizes that they were the bad singers on TV.  The kids start to call them names, but then over the fence comes Saya, and together Saya and Neo rocked their world. Earlier, Saya and Neo were trying to think of a name for their band, Neo wanted to call it “Keppo-Kozu” and Saya wanted to call it “Glory Days Generation”, but after the kids start clapping they know what to call it: “Clap”.

Overall
Mikansei is a unique story. I’ve never heard of a time traveling pop star, so this is kind of out there. It’s nice to see something different, although I have a feeling that it will evolve into a plot to save the world with singing. It is a comedy, but unfortunately it feels like it’s trying too hard to be funny, which is unbecoming. Mikansei can also be confusing at times because there is small text, specifically when someone makes a comment that is not related to the main part of what they say, and someone else will say something that directly relates to to the small text. If you missed it you would be thinking: "What just happened?" What I like about Mikansei is that the characters are well developed to the point that if they show up for just a few pages and you feel like you already know them. Mikansei rocks out loud.
