DVD Review: Xavier: Renegade Angel

Adult Swim has had a history of weird shows. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Squidbilies, and Tim and Eric Show: Great Job! to name a few. But none compare to the weirdness of Xavier: Renegade Angel. This show makes little to no sense at times, and even ends with no conclusion. It’s an exercise in confusion for the most part. It seems that watching them back to back helps to make sense of the episodes. Xavier: Renegade Angel is basically about the wanderings of a deformed person trying to enlighten and save the world.

The show really has a noncontinuous plot, and uses surrealist and absurdist humor throughout each episode. These elements all make the episodes seem a little weird. The disc set collects the first two seasons together. There are a few special features on the discs.  Two of the episodes on the first disc have commentary. On the second disc two episodes have what is called fanmentary, a commentary made by fans. There is something called “Damnesia You: Inhonorable Unmentionables” the fan made shorts that didn’t make it into the episode “Damnesia You”. Also on the disc is “Xaviercise” a metaphysical workout video.

Xavier: Renegade Angel is an interesting show. It is by far the weirdest show on Adult Swim. There are a few interesting moments here and there, and is worth a look. Most of the time the show is confusing and weird to watch. The humor is surrealist, and absurdist, so it takes a bit to get it. Buy it if you like the show, watch an episode or two if a friend has it.
