Horror Movie Gift Guide
The season of cheer has also been notorious for some great celluloid terrors; demonic snowmen, killer Santa Clauses and sorority co-eds being stalked over Christmas break, so why not give the gift that keeps on scaring. Here’s some ideas for that hard to buy for horror aficionados.
Midnight Meat Train – Blu-ray or DVD
This film is based on a Clive Barker story from his Books of Blood short story series. Midnight Meat Train follows the events that happen when struggling photographer Leon becomes obsessed with the mysterious man on the subway. He eventually witnesses a slaughter, and the ritualistic removal of jewelry, hair, nails, and teeth. As our photographer keeps investigating he finds that sometimes when curiosity kills the cat, the cat’s lucky.
Drag Me To Hell – Blu-ray or DVD
A loan officer denies a loan to on old woman, who then stalks and puts a curse on the banker, and who hasn’t. But we don’t haunt the banker like Mrs. Ganush does to Christine. Demons, curses and mistakes directed by Sam Raimi.
After Dark Horrorfest, Vol. 3 – DVD
Three years ago the good folks at Horrorfest sponsored a horror film festival in select cities and later released the eight movies on DVD. This spring they released Series 3, and this could be the best yet. Reality manipulation, people hunting people in the outback, crazy doctors, insanity, and just plain old weirdness abound. Look for the individual movies or the eight movie box set.
Trick ‘r Treat – Blu-ray or DVD
Bryan Singer, of X-men and Superman Returns fame has another hit with Trick ‘r Treat. Taking place on Halloween night, four stories are tied together by the actions of other characters and a burlap masked entity known as Sam. Trick ‘r Treat has a serial killer, ghosts, creatures of the night, and demons. Throw in some unexpected twists and you have a new Halloween classic.
The Hills Run Red – DVD
The ultimate horror flick has been made. A movie so scary that after a short run in theaters, the movie is pulled from circulation and disappears. Jump forward and we have a up and coming filmmaker that has gathered a group together, including the directors stripper daughter, to search for the lost film. Instead they find a character from the movie, Babyface, a disfigured man wearing a baby face mask. Don’t let the Direct to Video label fool you, this is a fun movie with the potential for sequels.
Honorable Mentions
There’s a huge amount of older horror films being re-mastered on DVD, released on Blu-Ray, and in some cases being dug out of the vaults and released for the first time. So take a look around for that special classic flick.
