Blu-ray Review: Stargate The Movie- 15th Anniversary Edition

Stargate: The Movie, the film that kicked off the longest running U.S. Science Fiction show has returned to Blu-ray in a brand new, 15th Anniversary Edition! Now you can relive the original adventure to the planet Abydos with your old friends Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader).

For those of you who don't know the story: Many years ago, an alien race came to Earth and ruled with their vast technology, enslaving the population. Claiming to be the beings we know as the Egyptian Gods, these aliens used humans to create pyramids as landing sites for their massive interstellar ships and transported slaves throughout the universe by use of a device called the Stargate. By dialing different coordinates, the Stargate can connect to different Stargates on different planets. The slaves on Earth eventually rebelled and they sent these false Gods back to the stars. The Stargate on Earth was buried and was never to be uncovered again for fear that the aliens would return.

Fast forward to 1994: Dr. Daniel Jackson has a lot of wacky theories that the pyramids were built by aliens…but no one in his field believes him…except for Dr. Cathrine Langford, who discovered the long buried Stargate with her father in 1928 at a dig near Giza. Langford enlists Jackson's aid in deciphering the ancient writing on the gate. Jackson reluctantly agreeds and with his help, they are able to unlock the secret of the gate. A team is dispatched through the gate and begin their epic adventure to a strange new world still ruled by Old Gods. Can they return home and save a civilization from enslavement?

Overall:
This movie looks and sounds fantastic. With the upgrade to 7.1 DTS HD Audio, the viewer really feels like they are a part of the action (yes I know that sounds cheesy, but in this case it really is true). Stargate is one of those films that has continued to hold up over the years and has spawned four different TV shows (SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, and Infinity), 2 Direct-to-DVD movies, and a series of books. If you don't have this in your collection (or even if you do) then check out this new release. Each new version that has been released keeps getting better and this one is definitely worth your time (and money).

ComicsOnline gives Stargate: The Movie 5 out of 5 wormholes to another world.
