This show from 2006 can best be described in two words: Fan Service. Lots and lots of fan service. With a dash of plot. The show revolves around the Yoshikawa family (Haruo, Maika, Chiaka, and Fuyuno) and a witch named Ayumi Maniya, who is tasked with lifting a curse that had been put upon her by “making a man” out of Haruo and arousing his latent powers. This show is definitely not for children.
Highlights
Disk 1
This disk is mainly the introduction of all the characters in the show and their relationships to Haruo: his younger sister Maika who has an implied brother complex, Ayumi Maniya who needs Haruo to break a curse that will drain her powers after a few years, the Student Council President Yuri Kurosu (another witch who has some of the humor directed towards her due to her name), and to finalize the girls that are after Haruo’s affection is Marin Nijihara (a Catholic witch hunter) who loves Haruo because she believes him to be a saint because he can keep the evil witches at bay. There is a lot of humor here, but after a maid, Rika Anju, joins the cast, we learn of a hidden plot, just as the disk ends.
Disk 2
This disk is a very nice blend of dramatic plot and humor that really got me into this show. It was nice when the hidden plot really started to take center stage and Ayumi’s task ends up becoming hillariously stopped. Other highlights include a funny episode with talking cat panties, and a touching Christmas episode. Sadly, the show reaches its climax with the last two episodes that I felt really cheated the audience. It was a great build up, but I just feel it could have been spread out a few more episodes to go more into how Ayumi is really feeling for Haruo, and maybe have a better ending.
Overall
Some of the great humor occurs in the arguments among the four women each wanting Haruo for themselves. Also some fun parts involve two of Haruo’s friends: Their attempts to make money usually come with some overly elaborate machinery and humorous infomercials, one of which is a great reference to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Some other funny parts are when Rika does something, and a part of the Terminator theme will play, and when Maika will turn into a demon with a change of voice. Unfortunatly, as stated before, I felt that the ending just was cheating the viewer, if it were only a few more episodes longer it might have been better. Other than that, if you enjoy loads of fanservice then this show is for you.
