Blu-ray and DVD Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is now available for you to add to your collection on DVD and Blu-ray.

One of the most controversial releases of the Summer is now (legally) available for you to own! The film, by Director Gavin Hood, features Hugh Jackman in an early story about Wolverine, and explains how he came to eventually join the X-Men. So by now I'm sure you have a pretty good idea about the general story of this movie. Wolverine and his "brother" Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber replacing Tyler Mane in the iconic role) go off on their own and eventually join up with a program called Weapon X, led by X2 Villain William Stryker (now played by Danny Huston).

This group consists of superpowered individuals, including Fred Dukes (aka the Blob), John Spectre, Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool, as played by Ryan Reynolds), Agent Zero and a technopath named Chris Bradley (played by LOST's Dominic Monaghan). Wolverine eventually leaves the group to try and find his own path, but when a loved one is tragically murdered, Wolverine agrees to undergo an experimental procedure involving Adamantium in order to gain a new edge.

Blu-ray Special Features:

-The Roots of Wolverine: A Conversation with Stan Lee and Len Wein Featurette

-Wolverine Unleashed: The Complete Origins Featurette

-Weapon X: Mutant Files

-The Thrill of the Chase: The Helicopter Sequence

-Ultimate X-Mode Bonus View: X Connect, The Director's Chair, Pre-Visualizing Wolverine and the X Facts Trivia Track

-Deleted and Alternate Scenes- This includes the scene of Young Storm which was shown in one of the commericals. I must say, it was a huge let down. Remember the shot of Wolverine leaving Weapon X and walking away? Young Storm is standing in the middle of the group shot and she is the reason why it starts raining…So she is visable for a whole three seconds.

DVD Special Features:

You know those awesome special features that come on in between segments of your favorite TV show? The ones that sell you toothpaste, let you know that Megan Fox’s next awful career decision is about to hit theaters, or alert you that water is a valuable resource and should not be squandered by being poured on plants? If you like those, you’ll love the extras on the DVD release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

One of three special feature selections is the “Trailers” menu which allows you to watch the trailers for I Love You, Beth Cooper and Dollhouse Season 1. Due to the fact that Wolverine has 3 scenes where he has a cigar (that hasn't been lit) in his mouth, our second bonus feature is an anti-smoking PSA. The PSA paints the picture of a bustling city where all cigarette smoke is replaced with bubbles. ***SPOILER ALERT*** The baby in this PSA prefers bubbles to carcinogenic smoke. The third bonus feature, or ONLY bonus feature depending on how you look at it, is the “Wolverine Unleashed: The Complete Origins” featurette. This special feature is the cast and crew talking about how awesome and significant the movie is, it’s your typical bonus feature.

Overall:

While there were a lot of things that people didn't like about this movie, there were some good things to point out. Ryan Reynolds really embodied the role of Wade Wilson early in the film. It was a total disappointment how the Deadpool character was handled later on, but at least we had a good moment in the beginning, and there is still a chance of a Deadpool movie, starring Reynolds as the version of the character from the comics that we really hoped to see. It also seemed very easy for Hugh Jackman to return to the role of Wolverine. Liev Schriber was a hugh step up from Tyler Mane as Sabertooth, and really took the character to a new level. Yes, there were a few good action sequences, but this was not the dark and gritty Wolverine film that we were being promised…

ComicsOnline gives X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.5 out of 5 hopes for a better Wolverine sequel in Japan.
