I have always been into superheroes. When I was growing up, I tended to be more into Marvel, but when I reached adult hood, I switched over to DC. During my childhood, I watched all of the superhero cartoons: X-Men, The Amazing Spiderman, and Batman: The Animated Series. This was also during the time when Cartoon Network still showed the old cartoons including Superfriends. I watched this as often as I knew it was on. Now I wasn’t the biggest fan of it then, but now I realize that I did happen to really like this cartoon. I happen to like it even more now, because it was something fun, and still kept the best superheroes around. Superfriends: The Lost Episodes is a treasure for the fans of the series because the last few episodes are now available to watch at a fan’s leisure.
The DVD contains the lost episodes of Superfriends. Originally aired as a part of the Superman/Batman Adventures after being lost for more than a decade, these episodes produced after the end of the series run brought a few more exciting adventures to the Justice League and to the fans.
Episode Highlights:
“Once Upon A Poltergeist”: Superman and Apache Chief deal with the spirit of a Mohawk Indian destroying the Wayne Building.
“Terror On The Titanic”: Aquaman and Black Vulcan deal with an undersea creature that looks like the Titanic.
“Two Gleeks Are Deadlier Than One”: Gorilla Grodd creates an android copy of Gleek to destroy the JLA
“Video Victims”: Bizarro Superman traps Superman, Wonder Woman, and El Dorado in a Video game machine to destroy them
There aren’t too many special features, but what they do have are interesting. There is a downloadable comic that you can view and read on your television, but the quality is much higher when you download it to the hard drive of your computer. The two comics are put together as if they were from one issue of the Superfriends comic book that was published around the shoe. The first comic “The Mindless Immortal” is about the Justice League dealing with a giant mole creature who is immortal, and can’t be hurt or killed. The second comic is “Wendy and Marvin Meet The JLA” where Wendy and Marvin Meet the JLA. There are also two trailers on the disc. One is for Green Lantern First Flight, and the other is for The DVD release of Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
The Video and sound quality are excellent. It’s as if you got the chance to watch the show all over again, but a little clearer on all accounts. There was a bit of restoring to them, but there isn’t too much of a new shine, so they feel as if you were watching a favorite show all over again.
Superfriends: The Lost Episodes Is a really good DVD set that brings back the old Super hero cartoons, which weren’t too violent, had a message and were fun to watch. There aren’t too many special features, but that lets the episodes shine as what’s special about the DVD. I’d recommend this one to all DC fans, fans of the JLA and fans of cartoons from this era.
