DVD Review: One Piece Season 2 Second Voyage

The crew of the Going Merry is back and do you know what’s better than pirates? Not a Pirate Ninja, though that would be cool to see. The answer is pirates fighting dinosaurs. Second Voyage continues right where First Voyage takes off. Vivi joins the Straw Hats temporarily so that she can get back to her home country of Alabasta so that she can stop the emerging revolution that is about to engulf her nation!! For anybody who had watched the first television airing of One Piece will be nice sandwich of new and old footage.

Highlights

Disk1

What was nice about this disk is that it not only gives us an idea of just how powerful the higher up members of Baroque works are. And at the start it takes a small break to show how Luffy’s friend, Coby joined with Axe-Hand Morgan’s son Helmeppo, is fairing with his goal to join the Marines. The two episodes of that are real touching as well because it shows how far both are willing to go in order to achieve his dream. After the growth of Coby and Helmeppo, the story goes back to a new arc involving Giants and a century old duel, so old in fact they both have forgotten why they were fighting to start with, on an island with dinosaurs. The disk ends with a dirty trick and the start of a new fight.

Disk2

This disk, not only makes up for the lack of Luffy action at the start of Disk1, but has enough drama to keep you from laughing all the time. Some of the touching scenes are when the giants duel is over and the realization that the fight had been tampered with. This disk is mainly 4 episodes of the Straw Hats against the Baroque Works agents that were following them. The final episode of the fight shows some of the best humor and bit of fan service from Nami. It also had a part that, while making sense in context, still feels like all that drama was wasted for happy ending. The final episode was shown on television in the first play through and wraps up in a touching part with Nami getting mysteriously sick.

Overall

What was nice about this volume is that it finishes off the episodes that the original play through cut from the line up. It was sad that they did, because these were some funny episodes. The show is great and this arc just makes me want to keep watching more. Some of the funniest parts are when Luffy is jumping from the head of one dinosaur to the other just so that he can see more and more. Some other fun parts are when Sanji and Zoro are having a fight on who got the most meat on their kill. Sanji had taken out a Tyrannosaurus Rex, with nothing but his legs, and Zoro had taken down a Triceratops. But what really got me laughing was when Zoro, Nami, and Vivi are trapped in a giant candle and are slowly being trapped in wax. Zoro, after attempting to cut off his own legs in order to fight, accepts his fate and raises one arm with his sword in hand to pose. What made it funnier is that he just nonchalantly brings up that Nami and Vivi should have picked a pose when they were near total encasement.
