I got the chance to speak with Rachel Miner (Horrorfests’ Penny Dreadful, Tooth and Nail, and Butterfly Effect 3) at San Diego ComicCon on Saturday. We chatted about her role preparation for Penny Dreadful, her thoughts about being a Scream Queen, how movies and Algebra don’t compliment each other, and how I’m enjoying the Con.
Rachel Miner is a lovely young lady, quick to smile, with an unassuming demeanor that made this less of an interview and more of a friendly conversation.
The conversation began with my statement of how her role of Neon in Tooth and Nail was very good, but her performance as Penny in Penny Dreadful was so powerful and intense. I wanted to know how she prepared for a role that required her to act alone in the backseat of a stranded car? Rachel says the preparation was to simply put herself in the position of the trapped victim and how she would react in that situation.
We talked about how she has been cast in several types of genres, but her most powerful have been in the Horrorfest films. How did she feel about the prospect of being a “Scream Queen” She thinks that some of the more diverse and better roles these days are written in the horror genre, and would not shy away from any well written role.
I apologized to her for not being able to talk about her role in Butterfly Effect 3, but I watched it while doing algebra homework, and I didn’t concentrate on the complicated plot. She thought this was funny and asked what I was in school for. Rachel thought it was great that I was going for an education major with endorsements in math and science. She says she’s a geek and likes those subjects a lot also. She also likes the fantasy and sci-fi comics and while not a comic geek, was looking forward to exploring the Comic Con. Rachel asked what my favorite part of the convention was. I replied that being a metal head I always hit the Century Media/Nuclear Blast booth to get recommendations on new music, and that I enjoy talking to the stars, which Rachel denies being, that entertain us. She seemed genuinely pleased to hear that, and actually beamed.
To wrap things up I asked that since she was in the three previous Horrorfests would she be in one of the movies in the Horrorfest 4 series, to which she could not confirm nor deny.
It was a pleasure to talk with this young actress, and I believe we will see great things from her in the future.
