DVD Review: The Dagger of Kamui

“Looks tasty.”

A young boy named Jiro comes home from a night of fishing, only to find that both his foster mother and sister have been killed. Jiro noticed a dagger next to his mother and he picked it up, but just then an old women noticed Jiro with the dagger standing next to his dead family. The old women thought that Jiro had killed his family and got the rest of the villagers to chase him out of the village with nothing but the dagger he had picked up. As Jiro ran through the woods, he came across a priest named Tenkai. Tenkai told Jiro that he knew who killed Jiro’s family and told him that he would help Jiro to avenge his family's death. After Jiro helped Tenkai kill the man, Tenkai took Jiro to his village to be trained by Shingo and Sanpei in the ways of the ninja. Little did Jiro know, Tenkai was really the person who caused his family’s death.

Highlights
After Jiro finished his ninja training, he went on a quest to find his birth family. When Jiro met his birth mother she told him that his father had been gone for a long time and was most likely dead. Jiro was also told that the reason that his birth family gave him up is because Tenkai and his ninjas attacked the village and the only way Jiro’s family could save him was to send him down a river in a basket. After Jiro and his mother had their first dinner together in a long time, Tenkai’s ninja Shingo, Jiro’s old teacher, killed Jiro’s birth mother. The next morning Jiro was once again accused of killing his mother and chased out of the village but before Jiro left he retrieved the things his mother left, which included a clue that leads to the grand treasure of Captain Kid in a far off land called America.

Overall
The beginning of the movie is difficult to follow because it quickly jumps from scene to another scene, and things don’t begin to come together until the middle of the movie. The story line is sometimes difficult to grasp, it is suppose to be about Captain Kid’s treasure but is really about Jiro’s struggle against Tenkai and with two story lines in one movie they both become somewhat diluted. One thing that would have made this stronger is humor, it lacked any great humor, most great anime balance humor and drama. I also feel that the name of the movie could have been something different, the dagger was mostly unimportant, it did hold a clue to the treasure and was Jiro's weapon of choice but it just didn’t get talked about much. Fight scenes where good, they only lasted for a few moments but  they where believable to an extent. They where almost all ninja battles but there was one ninja versus cowboys battle witch was pretty awesome and I haven’t scene it in any anime before. Overall, the story was entertaining because it took you from the far east to America and even made you think about the age old question “Who is better,
Ninja or Pirate?”.

Extras
There are character biographies that give a paragraph on each character that was important in the story line. There are maps that show all of the places Jiro went, and there is also the original trailer for the movie.
