Blu-ray Review: Green Lantern- First Flight

"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power… Green Lantern's light!"

The Green Lantern Corps, a galaxy wide police squad dedicated to keeping the galaxy safe unbeknownst to us puny mortal earthlings. Enter Hal Jordan, test fighter pilot on earth who becomes chosen when a fallen member of the GLC crashes to earth and needs to find someone to inherit his ring that gives him power to fight evil. The origin story for Green Lantern has been told and redone many many times over throughout the years in the various different mediums and this new movie, Green Lantern: First Flight, is no different.

Brought to you by the creative mind of Bruce Timm (Best known for creating the DC Animated Universe series of shows), this retelling of the tale wastes no time jumping right into the action taking care of Hal recieving the powers of the Green Lantern within the first 5 minutes. After that we jump right into the Green Lantern Corps on Oa introducing us to such characters like the Guardians, Sinestro and the fan favorite Kilowog as Hal learns much more about the universe and is brought under Sinestro's command to help train him in the ways of the Corps. Along the way, allies are tested and friends are betrayed as Hal learns there is much more going on then he was aware of as he rises up to the challenge and becomes a true hero.

The feel of the movie is very remincent of the movie Training Day in the way the plot is set up and the general feel which is a great way to tell the story… until we reach the climax of the film where the plot seems to loose its steam and forgets what it was trying to be (Hint: It involves a Yellow Lantern that is actually a mini-Death Star… I never knew Sinestro was a Star Wars fan!).

Christopher Meloni as Hal is a very interesting casting choice but he never quite hits the mark when it comes to the character, especially after David Boreanaz spot on take of it with The New Frontier movie, but Meloni is still passible. The real star of the movie is Victor Garber voicing Sinestro who's take on the character is possibly the best version I have ever seen. Rounding out the cast are Tricia Helfer and Michael Madsen as Boodikka and Kilowog who really aren't given enough of a chance to shine (Despite a highly forced moment for Kilowog near the end of the feature).

Overall
Green Lantern: First Flight is a very solid and enjoyable outing and continues the wave of DC animated Direct to Video features quite nicely. The animation style is very unique and different then a lot of the other DC animated titles out there and it pays off by bringing something new to the table. The Blu-Ray version is very nice and clean which really shows off some of the great animation put forth in the feature and the soundtrack is very solid from beginning to credits. The main theme is one you will be humming for days on end! Its a great way to spend a couple of hours as long as you don't go expecting too much from it.

ComicsOnline gives Green Lantern-First Flight 4 out of 5 great animated features…you Poozers.
