Manga Review: Rasetsu, Vol. 1

Rasetsu Vol. 1, is about an 18 year old girl who can see ghosts.  Her occupation is Exorcism.  Her name is Raestu Hyuga . She was cursed by a demon, who claims he loves her and will come get her when she turns 20.  This curse, however, can be broken when Rasetsu finds her true love.  In the meantime, she works with spiritualists who run an exorcism business.  Rasetsu and her partner spend most of their day removing confused souls form people's property, and dealing with the numerous women who come to the office just to see their boss (claiming that they are possessed by a demon).  Life is pretty normal until one day a man comes to the office and offers them an exorcism job.  He's a librarian and one of the donated books is possessed by a ghost.  The boss accepts the job and he sends Rasetsu and her partner to take care of it.  When they get to the library, the librarian shows them to the room with the book.  Rasetsu is surprised to find a water barrier keeping the ghost contained.  The librarian confesses to putting up the barrier and after the job is finished, Rasetsu's partner offers the librarian a position at the office.  He turns it down, but the next day at work, his boss fires him because he has this special gift and should be using it to its full potential.  So, the ex-librarian is taken to back to the exorcists office and is put to work being the bookkeeper, and going out on missions with Rasetsu and her partner.Through their missions, they develop relationships and learn more background information about each other.

Rasetsu wasn't what I expected, which turned out to be a good thing.  I found it to be quite entertaining and engaging.  The beginning of this volume was more comical then I ever imagined, I almost forgot it was supposed to be a romance novel.  The character of Rasetsu was in a way comically  mature, and I found that to be the most entertaining part of the story.  The plot was simple, and yet it was deep and unfolding right before my eyes as I read.  It was a little predictable though, especially when it comes to the romance between Rasetsu and who her true love is going to be, at least that's what I found.

I did enjoy this manga, it was a pleasant surprise! I think those who enjoy Vampire Knight and Fruits Basket will enjoy Rasetsu.  And it's not just for girls, there's action and plenty of humor.  I wouldn't suggest this to someone under 12, there are just some jokes that they will not get.  The story is lighthearted and easy to read, as well as pleasant.  It's like ice cream after a meal, refreshing and filling.
