Do you like wide open spaces? Communing with nature? Camping in the wilderness? Fresh air and sunshine? Traveling to exotic, exciting places, and meeting new, interesting people? I have a double feature from afar that will interest you
First up is an offering from Spain, El Rey de la Montana or King of the Hill. Quinn is on his way to try to win back his ex-girlfriend, but has a brief rendezvous with Bea, a ner-do well, who steals his wallet during their brief interlude. Seeing her car take a side road, Quinn follows. On this lonely, uninhabited part of the countryside, Quinn and Bea become prey, like big game animals. Bea and Quinn are tracked, herded, and hunted.
There are no special features, but has an English dubbing track and subtitles. This movie has unexpected twists and the lack of plot detail keeps you off balance. You know nothing about Bea except she‘s a thief, Quinn is going to see his ex, and the hunters are, well a mystery. It makes you feel like you are there. I was pleasantly surprised with this flick.
ComicsOnline gives King of the Hill 3 mysterious predators out of 5.
Next in the double feature is England’s Eden Lake . Steve (Michael Fassbender – 300) has a romantic camping trip planned for him and fiancée Jenny (Kelly Reilly). Their troubles begin when there’s a verbal altercation with some local teens. The next day trouble escalates when some of their belongings and car is stolen; Steve has a physical exchange which results in the death of a dog. Over the top, violent revenge ensues.
Eden Lake is a deeply disturbing film on a couple of levels. Not bloody, gory disturbing but an emotional ’oh my god’ disturbing with a capitol “D” disturbing. There’s an intimidation scene where the leader ensures that no one can rat the others out, well I’m creeped out writing about it.
ComicsOnline gives Eden Lake 3 senseless acts of revenge out of 5.
Dimension Extreme is filling a void in the horror world, by providing unique movies from foreign markets, and the movies that rarely see theatrical release. They may not be the greatest in terms of continuity, effects, or acting, but there’s a passion to the films they release, an originality that makes a clichéd plot seem fresh. And it’s for this reason that films like these don’t get higher marks, they may be a 4 – 5 to me, but they’re not for everyone, thus the slightly lower grade. But if you want something different, something to make you go WOW, look for the Dimension Extreme logo.
