Blu-ray Review: Eagle Eye

The world is a much stranger place than we give it credit for. We each live in our own personal bubble and sometimes don’t realize that things are out of our control. We place a lot of value on technology that makes our lives easier. It is easy to take that technology for granted. What happens when that technology is placed in the wrong hands? Welcome to Eagle Eye, the techno-thriller film from Director DJ Caruso. This new action film is now available on Blu-ray and DVD!

Story
Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf – Constantine, Transformers, Indiana Jones) was just a normal, unsuspecting guy when his life was ripped out from under him. The film starts out with Jerry attending the funeral of Ethan Shaw, his Air Force Lieutenant twin brother. After dealing with his brother’s death, Jerry tries to go about his daily routine. He goes to his ATM and learns his bank account has had a several thousand dollar increase. He then returns home and finds that someone has planted a large cache of explosives, guns and fake documents. Upon this realization he gets a phone call from a women telling him that the FBI will be breaking down the door in a matter of moments and he needs to leave. Well, Jerry doesn’t believe this was actually happening to him and stays only to get caught by Agent Morgan (as played by Billy Bob Thornton). Jerry makes a miraculous escape with the help of the woman on the phone who apparently has control over many types of electronics. Now Jerry, along with another woman named Rachel (Michelle Monaghan – Constantine, Mission:Impossible III), must do what they are told by this mysterious voice or loose their lives and their loved ones. But who is behind the voice? What is their diabolical plan? Well those are the big twists my friends. There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye (no Megatron is not behind the voice, but Shia is in the movie so I had to make the obligatory Transformers reference).

Overall
This film really is an exciting ride. There are some great twists that make this film that much more enjoyable. It is another great example of technology gone wrong and fits in line with other techno-thriller classics like The Matrix and Terminator 2. The concept of taking normal people and “activating them” for a new purpose is interesting. The voice on the phone has access to all types of technology and can control them at their whim. What is the stop something like this movie from happening in real life? Who knows. But if it’s anything like this, we should all be aware of what is possible.

***Side Note***
Eagle Eye’s Executive Producer Steven Spielberg sure loves Shia LaBeouf. Since the summer blockbuster Transformers, Steven has utilized LaBeouf in this film as well as his other project: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. What’s next for Shia? How about starring as Yorrick Brown, the last man on Earth in Director DJ Caruso’s take on the amazing comic book “Y: The Last Man.

ComicsOnline gives Eagle Eye 4 out of 5 disturbing looks at technology.
