Blu-ray Review: Supertroopers

Dear Fox,

I hope you are doing well. I am fine. I wanted to write to say thank you for releasing Supertroopers, one of my favorite comedies, on Blu-ray. It is really great. That was very nice of you. Tell everyone I said hi.

Love,
Matt

In all seriousness, Supertroopers (the cult classic comedy from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe) is now available on Blu-ray. This hilarious comedy features the members of an inept Vermont Highway Patrol officers who stumble onto a drug crime circuit. Now the people would be least likely to solve the case must solve the mystery and stop the bad guys! But don’t worry, there are tons of antics along the way. They also must contend with the local police from the rival department in Spursbury. When it seems that the Highway Patrol office will be shut down, the gang must do everything they can to keep it open…and that means remaining on their best behavior (yeah right).

Meet the Troops
-Captain John O’Hagen (Brian Cox)- He is the head of the Vermont State Highway Patrol and is working to keep the station from being closed. He tries to come off as level headed but in reality he is just as crazy as the rest of the team.

-“Thorny” Ramathorn (Jay Chandrasekhar)- Second in command of the Highway Patrol. The others look to him for guidance when in trouble. Thorny gets into as much trouble as everyone else, but is the master of syrup racing.

-Rodney Farva (Kevin Heffernan)- Farva is the black sheep of the group. No one wants to deal with him. He has zero social skills and is just one of the most annoying people you could ever deal with.

-Jeff Foster (Paul Soter)- Apparently can’t grow a mustache. Also, he likes to live on the edge because he spends his spare time falling for a member of the rival police force from Spursbury.

-“Mac” Womack (Steve Lemme)- Has a costume of a man violating a bear. Why does he have this? No one knows for sure. But it is an awesome distraction.

-“Rabbit” Roto (Erik Stolhanske)- New guy on the force who is still trying to prove himself.

Highlights
This movie has so many great moments that it’s hard to name them all.

-Don’t Do Drugs (and especially don’t drive around with them)- A few teenagers learn the hard way that you shouldn’t do drugs when they get stopped by the highway patrol. This opening sequence established that this wouldn’t be your typical comedy movie. Expect the unexpected.

-No More Shenanigan’s- The next person who says the word Shenanigan’s is gonna get pistol whipped.

-Bear F***er- Best distraction ever.

-“In my day we used blanks”- Be careful what you are shooting at…

-“Give me a liter of cola”- Who asks for a liter of cola? Farva does. Awesome scene.

Special Features
-Audio Commentary by Director/Actor Jay Chandrasekhar, and Co-Writer/Actor Erik Stolhanske

-Audio Commentary by Co-Writers/Actors Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme and Paul Stoer

-Stupor Troopers: The Drinking Game- I love it when a movie tells me how often I should be drinking. This game is awesome.

-Outtakes and Extended Scenes- This includes an Alternate ending as well as commentaries

-Original Theatrical Trailers

Overall
This is an extremely funny movie and it ranks up there with other comedies like Animal House and Old School. It is totally unpredictable and keeps the audience laughing with every turn. If you don’t already have this in your collection then make sure you check out this great Blu-ray release.

ComicsOnline gives Supertroopers 5 out of 5 unexpected comedies.

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
