Comic Book Review: Mystique #1

by Matt Sernaker, Editor-In-Chief

Now that Krakoa has fallen (R.I.P.), the world is about to be reminded that you shouldn’t mess with Mystique! Our favorite shape-shifter (well, favorite second to Morph) takes the spotlight in a new solo series from Marvel Comics. What exactly is Raven after and what does it have to do with Nick Fury Jr.? Find out in Mystique #1!

Official Synopsis:
Reminding the world to hate and fear her! How do you track a subject with a history that contradicts itself? How do you stop a force whose motives change like quicksilver? How do you stop a target that can be anyone? That’s the question that confronts Nick Fury as he stumbles upon a web of lies and espionage leading back to Mystique. From the ashes of Krakoa, the shape-shifting mutant terrorist returns to remind the world exactly why it hates and fears her. From award-winning creator Declan Shalvey (MOON KNIGHT), MYSTIQUE sifts through the dark underbelly of the Marvel Universe to tell a tale of action and espionage targeting Marvel’s most mysterious mutant.

Creative Team:
Writer/Artist: Declan Shalvey
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: VC’s Clayton Cowles

Mystique is once again a woman on a mission. We pick up with Raven tracking down her old buddy Maverick, as this Weapon-X member holds key information about the MacGuffin known as the “Protozoa.” Maverick catches on quickly to her shape-shifting games, but that isn’t going to stop her from achieving her goals. Meanwhile, readers are brought up to speed on the adventures of Nick Fury Jr. (or lack thereof). With S.H.I.E.L.D.’s role in the Marvel Universe depleted due to budget cuts (yup, that’s a thing), Fury will need to go old school to find Raven. With a little help from his dad, it looks like we are going to be treated to an interesting game of cat and mouse in subsequent issues.

I’ll be honest, this book was not at the top of my radar for the new “From the Ashes” era of X-Men titles. I knew it was happening, but that was about it. Shalvey’s writing and artistic style are a fantastic fit for the spycraft style outing, and Mystique versus Fury Jr. is an extremely compelling pairing. One challenge that I have that is more of a “me issue” than a book issue is that every time I see Nick Fury Jr. written out on the page, my brain automatically kicks to the James Bond Jr. theme song. Again, it’s not the fault of the book, just something I needed to acknowledge. Mystique #1 was a lot of fun and now has my full attention. It felt like a nice mix of Mission: Impossible and The Bourne Identity. I don’t know about you, but I’m going back for the next issue and want to see where Raven’s adventures take us next.

Rating: ★★★★☆

(Managing Editor/Director of Media Relations) Matt interviewed MacGyver once (true story), and was invited on a submarine to the Arctic. It hasn't happened yet, but Matt hopes that some day he will get the call and he and Richard Dean Anderson will go off and have a wacky adventure.
